BTD-786's antennae fluttered when she noticed the woman and the dog approaching, and she stood up too, prepared to move on. They were moving quite slowly, though BTD could tell it was because of the injured dog. Once or twice, she made a valiant attempt to offer to carry the dog, since she could carry a good twenty times her body weight. But unfortunately for her, she had hardly opened her mouth when the words and thoughts running through her mind became all garbled, and she frowned, opening and closing her mouth a few times as she painstakingly attempted to formulate her desired sentence.

At last, she gave up, deciding that if the need arose, she would simply do her best to show through her actions that she was willing to help carry the dog. As a result, the trek was a very silent one for the cockroach girl. Not that she minded; had she been traveling alone, it would likewise have been silent, at least until she came across other cockroaches.

She stared up at the woman when she sensed that the woman was speaking to her, even though she was still getting used to being called something other than BTD-786. The girl tilted her head, eyes wide as she concentrated with every fiber of her being and slowly processed the woman's words. Food, scouting, threats, and shelter were concepts that made sense to her, and after a few moment's pause to allow her to work through the other words, she nodded and turned towards the town, her nose and antennae twitching in the air as she turned her head from side to side.

Before long, she caught a whiff of a scent that interested her, and she began making her way towards it, her eyes instinctively opened wide and taking in the visual details surrounding them, even though she was actually relying much more on her sense of smell. She didn't see much benefit in the comparatively clear vision her human body afforded her, though it was a nice bonus that could keep her entertained for hours whenever she sat and simply looked around at the world.

Eventually, she let out a happy chirp when she noticed two things that did interest her: namely, twenty pages of a ripped phone book and another cockroach. With a feeling of relief much like finding a fellow countryman in a foreign land, she squatted down by the side of the street and began hissing and chirping to learn about the lay of the land while grabbing a handful of the torn yellow pages and stuffing them into her mouth. The combination of paper and glue was more than enough for a square meal.

She continued talking to her new roach friend, the two of them busily stuffing their faces with phone book fragments in between words. Even though BTD-786 rarely became hungry, if there was food in front of her, she could display quite an impressive appetite. Once she had scarfed down half the remnants of the book, she said her farewells to the other cockroach and turned back to her companions to convey what she had learned.

"S-Super...market," BTD-786 announced hesitantly, doubting herself halfway through the word. But she was fairly confident that what the roach described was called a supermarket. And if it was a supermarket, then this meant...

"Food? Food?" BTD-786 murmured questioningly. This was a potential jackpot and they probably wouldn't need any additional food for...years, by BTD's cockroach reckoning. She waved at Charlee to show that she wanted them to follow her as she followed the cockroach's directions and before long, a ransacked supermarket came into view.

BTD's face fell visibly when the scent of food that reached her seemed only reminiscent of the goods which must have once stocked the place. And indeed, when she stepped in, she was met with rows and rows of empty shelves which had clearly already been turned upside down and inside out by others before them. The roach girl's antennae waved harder as she doggedly combed the supermarket in search of something that might be useful.

At last, BTD-786 found an intact box, which she carefully opened and found full of little round things just like what she had given Charlee the night before. She decided to hold onto that and reached deeper into the shelf, reaching around until she fished out another box that looked rather different but still seemed to contain similar items.

Clutching tightly onto her prizes, she made her way back to the woman and displayed the results of her foraging. "Pa...race...ta...mole? Tea...lee...nole," BTD tried to spell out the strange label that didn't seem to obey any laws of the English language that she had learned thus far. She turned her gaze away from the boxes and held them out to Charlee, trying to read her reaction to learn if what she had found was any good.

Location: Outside Havenborough, Ashaea.
Time: 01:45, Tuesday 4th August, 2020.

Hanako had somehow managed to escape from her home town without any injuries. She was hungry but she would not eat yet. No, now more than ever she needed to ration out her food. Hunger was fine. She could deal with that for some time. Her foods were also perfect for the occasion: both crackers and rice held for a long time without any need of refrigeration. While they wouldn't be pleasant meals she had to at least be thankful for their shelf life.

Within Havenborough she could get away with moving around during day or night. The lay of the land was well known to her and she'd had access to plentiful hiding spots and shortcuts during her time there. Now luck played a much larger role. At least she had a map to assist her in her endeavors. It would give her a good indication as to where she needed to head and where she needed to avoid. It also meant that she didn't have to rely upon roads for travel. Doing so might have brought her into contact with more unsavory types, or potentially wandering herds of zombies!

Instead of moving around during any time she wished Hanako decided to stick with moving mostly during the day. It would be riskier for zombies with good sight, or for other people who weren't quite dead, but it'd also be easier for her to spot threats. Also, and perhaps just as importantly, it'd mean an easier time looting potential item stashes. Even so, she was exposed out here and most importantly of all she was out of clean drinking water. Because she needed to reach Taiom as soon as possible she decided that she'd keep moving as long as she possibly could and only sleep for short durations in places she deemed safe enough. Thankfully she had a few picked out along her route thanks to the map.

After traveling late into the night Hanako found herself at a small supplies shed near a fenced off power transformer. The little building itself was completely looted, but the door itself still worked well enough even if the lock was broken. After a brief check to make certain it was without inhabitants Hanako ventured inside, curled up against the closed door, and then ventured off to sleep. If anyone, or anything, wished to enter then she'd know right away. A window would be her only avenue of escape. But all she found was a good night's peaceful rest.

The sun had already risen fully by the time she woke from her slumber. Only after checking her surroundings for zombies did she afford herself a moment to yawn, stretch out, and finish waking up. I really wish I could take a bath she thought, scratching a hand through her great mane of messy red hair. As soon as she was somewhere safe with enough water that'd be her first move: taking a nice long hot bath, preferably with something nice smelling. Maybe some strawberries if she could find some.

Hours passed as Hanako made her way east through the forest. She moved carefully from tree to shrub to tree to tree and so forth. Cover to cover. It wouldn't be as quick as a marching pace, or even a normal fast walking pace, but it was the safest and smartest option. Besides, it gave her more of a chance to keep an eye out for things like rivers. Her fingers plucked at her clothing, already sticking slightly to her body due to sweat.

I'd even go for a cold river bath right about now.

As the sun stretched higher into the sky Hanako found the temperature rising. It certainly wasn't ideal, but at least she had plenty of shade. And, as luck would have it, she eventually found herself at a small house within the woods! She stopped at the treeline and for half an hour she remained put, keeping eyes and ears on alert for any movement or sounds. Nothing. Only the local wildlife remained active. Still, she couldn't let down her guard now.

Her approach was as cautious as her movement had been on the journey to this place. Any cover was used on her short trip over to the closest window. She stood up on her tippy toes, peeking inside. It was dark. She couldn't see much. But it seemed clear. However she didn't enter the house until she'd gone to each window that she could reach in order to repeat the same procedure. When she finished Hanako headed towards the safest door to enter: the open front.

Obviously people had been here before. If they were here now then they were being very quiet. She wasn't expecting to find much, but a search was good none the less. Carefully she ventured within, moving from room to room on the first floor just as she'd entered her own home the day before. It was during this quiet recon of the house that Hanako checked for loot, especially hidden stashes. Unfortunately she found nothing once more. The place had been well looted by those who came before. Still, there was another section of the house to check out.

Venturing upstairs was an arduous journey. The floors creaked in this place. She had to move twice as slow and twice as careful so as not to make too much noise. But she arrived at the second floor without any issues. She stopped when she reached the landing, listening for movements. After a minute she pressed on to the first room.

It was very messy. A scuffle had occurred here. But out of the corner of her eye she noticed a closet door left ajar and within it lie something. As she slowly approached Hanako noticed that it was a blanket! But there was something underneath it. There was also a desk in the way. Still, curiosity and more importantly thirst got the better of her. After all, what if it was water? She really needed some.

One hand settled against the tipped over desk in order to brace herself as she leaned over it, outstretching her other hand towards the blanket. Slowly she inched forth, fingers wiggling just a bit in anticipation. She brushed upon the soft wool blanket. Suddenly the desk tilted away, having been leaned upon less than she thought, and let loose a loud crack as it partially collapsed!

She remained absolutely still for a few seconds, heart racing within her chest. Nothing. Carefully she leaned in, pulling out the blanket bundled with whatever it'd been laying on. A soft sigh left her lips while she sat back, unfolding the new cover. To her surprise there was a package of chicken flavored instant noodles! More surprising still: there was a small knife! She already had a potent weapon but she figured that one more couldn't hurt, especially not one she could tuck away. Taking a knee, Hanako tucked the blanket and noodles into her satchel before carefully securing the small knife within her right boot, retying it so that it'd remain snugly in place.

Creak. Creaaak. Creak.

The girl's heart sank. Her head swiveled towards the doorway only to be met with the sight of a zombie. Two others were close behind and more were heard in the hallway behind it. Immediately she looked to the window. There was a tree outside but she didn't know if she could make the jump. Unfortunately her chances of fighting off even one zombie in a contest of strength were very slim, let alone three or more. Plus there were the heights to worry about. She was a floor up!

A sudden hiss and the quicker shambling of feet snapped her out of a brief moment of hesitation. She charged straight towards the window. While more zombies fumbled into the room Hanako leaped forth, planting one foot against a small nightstand below the window. All power was placed into the planted foot, both to lift her off the ground and to propel her out the window. Her arms crossed in front of her on reflex as glass shattered against her body. Any momentum she had built up was cut drastically by both the wooden frame which held it all together and a moment of brief hesitation brought about by her fear of heights. She felt her stomach sink as she started to drop towards the ground. But there was a lower branch, one she managed to land against. Arms wrapped around it for safety but even that was stripped away by the immediate cracking of wood. The tree limb managed to slow her but could not support her weight and ultimately both dropped the rest of the way to the ground below.

I'm gonna die! I'm gonna die! I'm go-

Everything went black.

Then came the ringing. Eyes fluttered open. A pained gasp escaped from her lips, body sitting upright a moment later as a squishy thud slammed into the ground behind her. Another arrived just as she turned her head. By the time she was on her knees and pushing to her feet Hanako was free to witness a third and forth zombie slamming to the ground from the window. Those who'd already made impact were already starting to crawl their way towards her, groaning and hissing despite their mangled bodies. One had even lost a jaw in the fall which in any other circumstance might have been somewhat comical.

Hanako suppressed a pained whimper as she stumbled to her feet, grabbing her satchel off the ground before she bolted off into the forest. As she passed the tree line her sprint slowed to a hurried limp as pain erupted in her side. But she dare not look towards the source, at least not until she was a safe distance away from the zombies. Noises were heard behind her. Were they chasing her? She hastened her pace and broke out into a run, although the pain limited her from a full sprint. How long she ran for was something she lost track of. In fact she didn't even stop when the sounds behind her stopped. But, eventually, she ran out of breath.

Pressing her back against a tree, Hanako turned to the west. Her right hand shakily moved for her machete, finally drawing it out after a few seconds of fumbling around. The weapon was held out in front of her, both hands squeezing tightly upon the handle. Eyes darted from side to side, searching the woods for approaching figures. She couldn't even hear anything else over her own heavy breathing. It felt like her heart could jump out through her rib cage at any second.

Please be gone! Please be gone! Please be gone!

Minutes passed. As her breathing and the thumping of her heart quieted down Hanako was greeted by the sounds of wildlife and nothing else. Once more she'd managed to escape from certain death. But as her adrenaline passed pain moved in. Eyes ventured down to check for injuries. Nothing seemed broken. There were a few visible bruises and she'd undoubtedly have plenty more later. Her clothes were a little dirtied and torn and a few minor scratches were noticeable. A shard of glass stuck out from her left side, leaving a wet crimson spot upon her wool shirt.

The short escape artist slumped down along the tree, resting upon her butt. Her machete slipped free from her hands. She could feel her face growing even paler than it normally was. It looked painful. It was painful. It frightened her to no end. She wasn't a medic. What if pulling it out killed her? Or made her too weak to fight off zombies? Was she supposed to leave it in? Wouldn't it hurt more? Could it do more damage if she left it?

"What do I do? W-what do I do?"

Her hands moved over to the piece of glass. She poked it with a finger, wincing at the pain it caused. Oh yes. It was going to hurt. A lot. But she ultimately decided to grip onto it with both hands and simply tug as quick as she could!

A loud yelp was followed by a low whining whimper. The shard was tossed away as she laid on her good side, holding both hands to the wound. It stung a lot. Tears filled her eyes but her lips remained pursed together in an effort to hush her crying and whimpering. If her parents were around they'd know what to do. They'd protect her.

She didn't have bandages or anything of that sort. Would leaves work? People always said to rub dirt in wounds. Or did they say not to? Probably not, right? Then again she did just pick up a new blanket, but then she also didn't know how clean it was. Ultimately she decided to grab some cleaner looking leaves off a tree branch. Her wool shirt and the athletic shirt underneath were carefully lifted up to reveal the wound. It was a shallow gash and was actually a lot better than it appeared, the glass having impacted mostly against muscle and rib, however she wasn't a medical expert and unfortunately couldn't figure that out for herself.

After the leaves were applied she stretched the tight fitting athletic shirt back over them, hoping it and the blood would be enough to hold the makeshift bandages in place. After the wool shirt was also replaced Hanako carefully dragged herself to her feet, rubbed any lingering tears from her eyes, picked up her machete, sheathed it, and started to limp her way off to the east.

On this night she would take an early rest. There was no house for her. No, all she had available to her was a patch of thick shrubs. They would at least keep her out of sight.

Wolfe was relieved when he peered around the corner of the street to find that it was completely empty. If it wasn’t for the burnt car that was sat in the middle of the road with shattered glass around it, and the neglectful state of the front gardens, one could almost imagine the world hadn’t come to an end. His eyes then trailed over to a break in the houses, and his interest peaked when he saw that there was a park. He stepped around the corner, his leg sending a flare of red hot pain up him as if he was being stabbed by the barricade all over again. He needed to sit down and rest his leg before he could continued searching for the pharmacy. He glanced at the sun and decided that he would rest a little in the park before he continued his search. He already had the Tylenol, so that would be good for killing pain but he was hoping to come across antibiotics just in case she developed an infection.

He limped forwards, Penny walking sedately by his side. He glanced down at her before looking around. She wouldn’t be so calm if there wasn’t any zombies nearby, and he certainly couldn’t see any. Not even in the distance, for which he was relieved. He didn’t know if he could actually run away in the state he was in right now. It was still very hot, as the heat of the day had still to dissipate. It actually made him feel even worse than he was, as the heat sapped away at his energy and made him feel sluggish. He much preferred colder temperatures. He always felt so much more lively and alert. While this kind of weather wasn’t debilitating, he certainly didn’t like it.

He reached the park and looked inside. The swings were broken, and the slide had been burnt down, leaving only a twisted piece of metal in its wake. The climbing bar was the most intact, with a few bullet holes in it and rusted in some places. There was a bench that was intact, missing only one horizontal plank in the back. He put a hand on Penny’s head, making her pause as he carefully inspected the small park to see if there were any hidden kitsunes. But he wasn’t able to spot any, much to his relief. He then moved over to the bench and sat down on it with a soft groan. His wounded leg stuck out at a slightly awkward angle, and he absently rubbed it before he looked down and pulled back the piece of blood-soaked cloth to see the grizzly wound beneath. He shifted the cloth back into place, hoping to find some proper bandages at the pharmacy. If not, cloth would suit him perfectly.

He leaned back, letting out a soft sigh as he kept an eye on his surroundings. While he was allowing himself to relax, he wasn’t allowing himself to drop his guard. Not for zombies, and not for other humans who might come at him with the intent of harming him. He felt a light nudge at his hand and he looked down to see Penny standing in front of him with a stick in her mouth. Her eyes were large and pleading with him, causing an unconscious smile to curve at the corners of his lips, “Of course…” He said softly. It was a waste of energy, but she deserved a break as much as he did. Not only that, but she would not have played with anyone since her owner either left her, or had died and turned into a zombie. So he decided to indulge her. He took the stick from her mouth before he threw it across the park. He was worried for a moment she would bark, but she soundlessly ran after it and skidded to a stop. She picked it up in her mouth and trotted back to Wolfe, her tail wagging and expression smug. It was so endearing that Wolfe couldn’t help the soft chuckle that slipped from his lips before taking the stick from her mouth and throwing it again. The only sound he could hear from her was the soft rustling of her paws against the long grass, and her panting breath. He hoped she wouldn’t work up too much of a thirst, because he only had a limited amount of water on him. But then she could likely drink the dirty river water he had, rather than the clean water. Dog stomach were hardier than their own, after all.

After several more throws, Penny seemed content to trot back over and sit down next to him. She dropped the stick to the floor in front of his feet before laying her head on his lap, on his uninjured thigh. He stroked the top of her head, keeping an eye in their surroundings for them to make sure that nothing, and no one could sneak up on them as they enjoyed a rare, relaxing moment. Wolfe didn’t want to be away from Zoe for so long, but if he pushed himself too far, he could end up injuring himself more than necessary. He knew she would prefer for him to come back alive and slightly injured, than more injured or even dead. She was too vulnerable for him to die right now. If he died, it would be a death sentence for her as well. Wolfe tore himself from these depressing thoughts and eyed a small clump of wildflowers that were growing nearby, idly wondering if he should pick them to take back to Zoe. She would certainly improve her mood.

Location: Outside Taiom, Ashaea.
Time: 05:30, Wednesday 5th August, 2020.

A low pained groan emerged somewhat muffled by the large shrubbery within which Hanako had fallen asleep. If someone had been around then they might have mistook it for a zombie! Perhaps even another zombie might have thought the same! Well, if they even did think at all in the first place. Thankfully no such being existed, right?

Slowly Hanako rolled onto her back, drawing in a couple deep breaths. Pain covered her entire body. An arm slowly lifted upwards, sleeve pulled back. Even in the darkened shrubs she could notice new bruises. Slamming through a window, slamming into a tree limb, and then slamming into the ground did not do her body any favors. Her tongue stuck out from her mouth as she pushed the sleeve back down. So much purple. Hopefully it'd heal quickly so she wouldn't have to look at it.

Amber eyes closed tiredly. It was so early. Why had she woken up? A low groan replied as though its owner had heard her thoughts. That was all the wake up that she needed! A hushed whimper left her while she rolled onto her hands and knees. At least her side didn't hurt as much as it did the day before. Perhaps it wasn't as bad as she thought?

Her head peeked out from the bushes as she stood to her feet. Four figures shambled along in the darkness to the west. They were moving pretty slowly, wandering really but still in her general direction. Perhaps it was good timing, or perhaps she'd been subconsciously woken by their noises. Whatever the case she need not worry so long as she was careful.

Lowering herself Hanako gathered her satchel, turned, and quietly crept out the other way. East was her direction anyways. At least they were just zombies though. What if she'd been found asleep by people? How would that interaction go down? It was something to think about regardless if she was going to an unknown town.

I wonder if there are any survivors there. Someone was still alive in Havenborough. At least one person. Do I risk trusting people?

It was a tough call. Her past screamed no but common sense screamed maybe. Numbers meant less stealth but it meant more security, especially if they ran into bad people. However it also drained supplies faster. She didn't even have any water. How well would that go? And what if they had guns? Guns would cancel out any weapon she had unless she was able to sneak up on them.

Why would anyone want me?

Another issue to dwell upon. If one person found her then yeah, maybe they'd offer to team up just for the extra hands. But if a group found her? Well they could afford to be more picky. They could simply take her things and leave her to die. She could try to join them instead but what would she really have to offer? Before all this she was a student. Sure, she could sneak around and move around pretty quickly and she could even pull off a little close quarters combat if she was careful. But what else?

I mean I guess they'd probably. . .well I am a girl.

Over the past few months she'd had momentary thoughts now and then about certain adult topics. Sure she hadn't developed all that much but she was getting to be of that specific age where people did things with each other. Girls had a lot of power in that area too. Some of her bullies had used their bodies to get what they wanted. It had been incredibly effective too.

I wonder if Roy is still alive. I wonder if any of them are.

She'd had at least one person who she could almost consider a friend back in middle school. A boy named Roy. They didn't know each other too well but he didn't pick on her. Occasionally they'd even share lunch together. And then one day during lunch he pulled down her pants in front of everyone. She couldn't place it back then due to her embarrassment and sadness and all that but looking back on it she could've sworn that he'd been at least ashamed about what he'd done. Anyways, rumor was that one of the girls who liked being cruel to her had promised him something lewd if he did it.

Is it wrong to hope those people didn't make it?

Unconsciously Hanako gripped one of her wrists, running a finger against one of the scars lingering along it. It probably was wrong, wasn't it? She felt a little bad thinking that way. Maybe she could give people one more chance, but then that one chance might be all she get as well. Was it really worth the risk? What if they were in danger, or trouble, or needed something badly?

I can't be like them. I'm not a bad person. But if they're okay then maybe I leave them be. I dunno.

Forest gradually shifted to farmland. On the far horizon she could make out clusters of buildings. Taiom was within reach! But she wouldn't even need to go that far to find something good if she were lucky.

Venturing towards the town placed her on a direct path towards the main road. She'd need to cut across it at some point. May as well do it before any intersections, right? There was even a small bundle of vehicles on the road. She made her way over to them, creeping as low as she possibly could during her approach.

She was very careful not to peek up too quickly. The first vehicle was empty. As was the second. And the third. The fourth one seemed to be on track for the very same before she happened to spot something on the floor, tucked away almost completely beneath a seat.

Hurriedly she popped open the door, dragging the object out. A toolbox! There was a lock on it too but it was heavily rusted. The window above had been left open. She turned away and looked along the road until she found a large rock. Then, venturing back, she steeled herself. She was still hurt after all.

Multiple quick strikes managed to overwhelm the integrity of the device. With growing anticipation Hanako tossed the rock aside and pushed open the lid! Papers. Hanako paused. Then, carefully, she slid them aside. Her eyes widened, instantly lighting up with joy!

One can of spam. More food was always good. Spam was meat too. Probably still good. Another small knife. This one looked considerably worse off, possibly even dull. Perhaps she could find one of those automatic sharpeners. They had those, right? And, finally, some batteries! Batteries were always in short supply and these were still packaged up! All she needed was a flashlight and she could finally have some light at night! Or maybe she could even find a little handheld radio!

Score! Finally something is looking up!

The batteries and spam were tucked away into her satchel. This time her left boot was untied so that her new knife could be stored within it, handle pointed up just like the last one for quick drawing action! With her boot retied snugly and the small convoy well looted Hanako turned towards the east, continuing on her way through the fields. Perhaps she'd get luckier in town. Maybe she could even find a pharmacy! And water! Here was hoping so!

Carefully she made her way forth into the town. It was foreign to her. She didn't even know where anything was. Nor did she know if there were others here. She kept herself low, moving quietly from cover to cover. Her eyes darted about, both in search of zombies and people and, of course, important buildings. Hospitals. Pharmacies. Markets. Gun shops. So forth.

Ultimately she found herself arriving at the edge of a small park. She was just about to venture out into it when she noticed movement from between a couple of bushes. This prompted her to lower herself behind a bench. A man emerged. He had a dog with him. Her heart started to pound within her chest.

Is he friendly? He looks injured. Or tired. Maybe both. He has a dog with him. Dogs know good people, right?

For the moment she'd stick in place and simply observe. Hopefully the dog wouldn't catch her scent.

Wolfe took his eyes away from the flowers he had been staring at, making a mental note to pick them so he could give them to Zoe later. For now he was content resting as he petted Penny affectionately, allowing the two of them to have a breather. However he tensed when he felt Penny shift, her head coming up and her ears pricking forwards attentively. She turned her head towards a bench. Her tail had stopped moving as she seemed to be eyeing it warily, “What is it, girl?” He asked. Penny stood up and moved over to the bench, her dark wet nose twitching as she smelt around the front of the bench. The border collie wasn’t growling, nor did she seem scared, so perhaps it wasn’t a zombie. Maybe it was a person, something that Wolfe knew to be equally as wary with. Gritting his teeth, Wolfe stood up and drew out his katana so that he was visibly armed. Everyone knew that being injured was not a good position to be in, especially if there were Wolf zombies around so for some, just the threat of being hurt was enough to dissuade them from engaging. Even guns had to be used sparingly, as the noise could attract other zombies from the surrounding areas and create a horde of them.

Moving on silent feet, a skill he had learnt during his time sneaking around zombies, Wolfe moved forwards the bench. It was then that he could see small feet through the legs of the bench. Either they were very small and thin, or they were a child. The thought of them being a child almost made him drop his weapon, but he hardened his grip before he moved around the side of the bench to confront the figure. He stopped, blinking when he found himself looking at a young girl. She had red hair, that looked almost like flame that cascaded down her back. Her eyes were also an unusual amber colour, a colour he had rarely seen. Both features unusual on their own, but captivating together. She was also quite small, smaller than Zoe he figured. She looked just as young as his younger sister. She also looked as if she was human, and the healthy shade of her skin suggested that she wasn’t a zombie, or even sick.

The thought that she was perhaps as young as his sister caused his sword to drop down its guard until the tip was pointed towards the ground, now no longer held in a threatening posture. Penny crawled underneath the bench, sniffing at the girl curiously. She certainly didn’t seem alarmed, so Wolfe figured that she doubted that the girl was any threat to him. Even so, he still kept the katana out, just no longer ready to immediately cut the girl down, “Who are you?” He asked. He knew that it might seem a little rude to just ask like that without offering his own name, but the only person he had any real interaction with was his sister and thus he was a little rusty when it came to social interaction.

Crap!

The dog had shifted its attention in her direction. A hand pressed against her wounded side, hoping that it would somehow help with avoiding detection. The wolf zombies used blood to hunt their prey. There was no reason to think that the dog couldn't detect her for the same reason. She kept herself lowered behind the bench as much as possible, however her right hand hovered over her machete just in case. With any luck it'd divert it's attention elsewhere. But at least its responses would clue her into whether or not it'd be a threat.

Just go away. Nothing to see here.

Unfortunately the man also took up a defensive posture. A long blade was withdrawn. Hanako's eyes widened. Instantly her mind went into tactical mode. Everything was analyzed while they approached. The man was clearly injured. He was possibly even weakened and worn out. But he was also larger, older, and certainly much stronger. He had a reach advantage not just with his arms but also with the very weapon he wielded. If she got in close then she'd have a distinct advantage: his weapon would reach too far to deflect her strikes. But that meant getting in close, avoiding being overpowered, and pushing through the pain from her own wound. The element of surprise would have helped her. It still could to a much lesser extent. But then she also had the dog to contend with. It looked healthy enough. Two opponents were a little much for her. Even the dog alone would prove a challenge to her.

Okay. Okay. Calm down. The dog doesn't seem aggressive. Everyone is on edge here. He is just on edge. Maybe he will pass me by?

The two of them stopped near the bench. Her fingers tightened around the rough handle of her weapon. She held her breath, kept as still as she possibly could. Then the man suddenly moved around to a point where he could see her. Worse still, he was ready with his weapon in her direction! Hanako fumbled with her weapon, clearly startled by the maneuver. She pressed herself back against the base of a tree, gasping slightly for air and partially due to her surprise. After a moment's struggle her machete was freed, the tip pointed up towards the katana wielder, blade shaking just a slight bit in her hands.

I'm gonna die. He's gonna kill me and take my stuff. Or worse. This is it. Do I strike first?

He was much larger up close. Larger and scarier. Then again most people were to her. His wounds were also a little more visible. Of course it'd be possible for him to notice the crimson splotch against the side of her wool sweater, a faint line darker and wetter as she'd unknowingly reopened the wound. Right now pain was the furthest thing from her mind. Moments passed like minutes. Who would be the first to strike? Would they speak? Could she react in time? Would it be painful?

As it turned out the stranger was the first to lower his weapon. It took her a few seconds to register before she too lowered her machete. The sudden sniffing of the dog startled her again, causing the girl to jump, back pressed harder back against the bark. But she relaxed when she noticed what it was. When he spoke up Hanako's attention immediately snapped back up towards the man. Did she tell him the truth?

"H-hanako" she whispered timidly. There was no point in hiding her name. It wasn't as though she'd made any enemies out here yet. A deep breath was sucked into her lungs. She had to calm herself. "You?"

Wolfe had noticed the machete that the small girl had raised in a defensive posture, the blade jerking slightly from her trembling. The fact that she lowered her weapon after he had, indicated that she had no intention to attack him, only to defend herself from him. He looked at her eyes and saw that she was frightened and acting out of fear, especially when she jumped as Penny sniffed at her. The border collie tilted her head, letting out a soft disappointed whine. Wolfe ignored the dog as he inspected the young girl again, his eyes drawn towards a crimson spot on her side, indicating that she was injured herself. He frowned, his training instincts kicking in to make him want to move to her side and inspect the wound. But he knew that with them barely knowing each other, she wouldn’t want him that close to her. He tilted his head slightly when she named herself,

“Hanako? That’s an interesting name…” He commented, before supplying, “I am Wolfe. And this is Penny.” He introduced both himself and his canine companion. Penny had slipped out from under the bench and was still sniffing at the young girl, her tail wagging in a friendly fashion. Taking everything into consideration, Wolfe decided that Hanako was no threat to him. If she were to attack him, it would have to be a close sneak attack. Otherwise he would easily overpower her and either kill her, or break her legs and leave her to the zombies. Neither option Wolfe liked, as he hated hurting people. He had always wanted to help and heal people. To show a little trust, he raised his katana again but only to put it away. He then held up his hands to show that he was unarmed. Then as Penny stepped even closer, he reached down and took hold of her collar to pull her back.

“Sorry about Penny. She seems a bit overly friendly.” He said, as Penny snorted as if annoyed that Wolfe was stopping her from making a new friend. He knelt down, not only because it was easier to keep a hold of Penny but because it made him look even less threatening, “I’m sorry for the weaponized greeting. You don’t know who’s out to hurt you these days.” He said, before his eyes flickered to the dark stain, “You’re hurt?” He then asked. If this young girl was indeed friendly, then Wolfe couldn’t in good conscious leave her behind to face the zombies alone. He couldn’t stomach the thought with Zoe, either. They were both far too young to be left in this kind of world alone. Wolfe would be very glad to have a new companion around, and no doubt Zoe could do with a friend closer to her own age. And it seemed that Penny already liked her. Wolfe was just hoping that this wasn’t some kind of false hope, like a gang using an innocent young girl to lure unwary travellers into their grips to either kill or enslave them.

If she hadn't already been frowning then now would have been the time to start. Poor dog. It was just friendly. She could tell that now. But letting her guard down for even a moment could mean her end. That was a risk she couldn't take, not even if she really wanted to pet the dog. In fact this was probably the first friendly dog that she'd seen since the outbreak. The others were too hungry and territorial, typically running in packs. She didn't blame them. It only saddened her to be so long without any sort of companionship.

Wolfe? Now that is an interesting name. Much cooler than Hanako. It sounds mysterious and strong. Fitting.

She allowed her gaze to wander for the moment. He was much taller than she was, probably having about two feet over her. Muscles were probably hidden underneath his clothes. Speaking of which, he wore the perfect attire: leather. It was good for resisting bites and scratches. He also had white hair and really neat blue eyes, pretty even. They were kind of enchanting. But, overall, he looked like he could belong in some sort of gang. Could she trust him? Did she even have a choice now? Well, yes, she could most definitely outrun him. Not his friend, but other people had great difficulty locking her down. it wasn't surprising though given her past.

The katana raised up. For a brief instant her weapon jolted upwards, pointing more towards the man's face! But when she noticed that he was sheathing it she felt, well, quite embarrassed. A faint hint of red flickered briefly across her cheeks while she sheathed the machete at her side. It cleared away as she took in a deep breath, finally allowing herself to relax. This was it. She had found someone. Whether or not it would end well was to be seen. But if she was going to trust anyone at all then it'd be the cool guy with the nice dog.

He could be a creeper too. I think I read somewhere that they used animal ploys to pick up kids. But he actually has a dog. Either he is fine or just really dedicated to the act.

"It's okay" she muttered quietly, flashing a brief smile towards the dog. "I understand. You can't really tell who out here is good."

It brought back memories of the last group. Some of them were a little rough around the edges. Abrasive. Rude. But they were good people. They didn't deserve the fate they received. More than one had died to make certain that she made it. The thought saddened her. But right now she did her best not to show emotion, to keep a neutral expression. Apathetic. Emotions could be used against a person.

When Wolfe mentioned her wound she glanced down. Now she felt the stinging pain. Still, she tried not to let it show. Nor did she want him to think that she was as injured as she thought she was. That sort of weakness could certainly be capitalized upon. So she ended up shrugging once in reply.

"It isn't bad."

I think.

The look on Wolfe’s face suggested that he wasn’t entirely convinced. If the wound truly wasn’t that bad, it wouldn’t have made such a large stain on her shirt. She was already putting herself in danger by not having it treated properly. The Wolves would be able to track her with ease with such a free-bleeding wound. He petted Penny on the top of her head, calming her down as she was sulking. He glanced around, habitually looking out for any signs of zombies before he returned his attention back to the girl once again, “Before… everything… I was training to become a paramedic. So I do know my stuff. Plus, I’m heading to the pharmacy to try and pick up any medical supplies.” He said, indicating to his own leg to show that she wasn’t the only one injured. He also knew that the wound on his arm also needed taking care of, as he had yet to give it any kind of treatment. He was hoping to get to the pharmacy and return to their little home base before treating it.

“The only thing I have on me right now is disinfectant, and some painkillers. Still, the disinfectant might be able to help you with any potential infection.” He added. He knew that an infection in these times, without ready access to antibiotics could kill you as surely as the zombies could. Granted, he figured it was a better way to die than to die to the N-virus and turning into one of those things. Granted, if he had any choice in the matter he would prefer to live so that he could keep his word to his father and get Zoe to safety, but if he was faced with the prospect of dying, he would much prefer a quick way. He shuddered at the thought of slowly losing his mind to become a zombie. One of the things he had always feared while growing up, was to grow old and to lose his mind. To slowly lose his memories so that even the ones that he loved dearly lost their meaning to him, and he would be staring at what he thought were strangers day, after day. It would be torture for his loved ones, to care for him so deeply and yet for him to stare back at them as if he had no idea who they were.

He felt Penny strain a little against his hold on her collar, and he broke out of his morbid thoughts to look down at her as she was seeming to want to head back into the park. He let go of her collar, giving her a pat on the side of her chest as he watched her trot off, before he looked back at the young girl again and giving her a warm smile that he hoped would put her at ease. The fact that she had already put her weapon away made it already seem like she was relaxing around him. If she did agree to come with him to the pharmacy, it would increase their odds of surviving, as well as for carrying even more loot. The more medicines, the better for Zoe.

This is it. Time to make a decision Hanako. Trust or loneliness. You trusted before. It was fine. You can do it again. Besides, he has a puppy!

A hand moved to her chest, hoping to calm down her rapidly beating heart. It was a somewhat frightening idea. After all this could all be a ruse! But it was fine. She was confident in her own abilities! Namely: running away really well. Also, again, there was the dog. She wanted so badly to pet it, but right now she had to put up a tough front, just in case he wasn't as he appeared to be. It would help, right?

A medic? Now this is too good to be true, right?

Her hand unconsciously drifted to her wound, pressing against it slightly. It stung, prompting an eye to wince in response. Funnily enough they both seemed to have the same idea as well: find important buildings! A pharmacy was a fine choice. Most people seemed to head to the hospital. On the other hand a pharmacy had less chances of sick people and, thus, zombies. In any case, he seemed to have a nasty wound on his leg. It only calmed her further still. Something like that would drastically reduce his chances of capturing her, let alone chasing her down or even fighting her. It was a huge weak spot to exploit. But hopefully all of that would be avoided.

When the man started naming off his medical supplies she remained silent. He had disinfectant. That was good. But it sounded like she had a little more. Maybe. "I have a few vitamins. Some Tylenol. And-" she paused, eyes briefly flickering down as she opened her satchel. "Para-. Paracetamol" she mumbled, swiftly closing it back up, eyes returning up towards Wolfe's face! She was still just a little wary of the stranger. But this was good! They were getting some good ground. And, more importantly, she was starting to warm up to the idea of going with him.

"I don't know what those are for. Actually I was heading that way too."

Wolfe's smile only made her feel uncomfortable. Not that she thought it was creepy or anything. Actually it made him a little more handsome! Handsome and trustworthy. No, she just wasn't good at these social interactions. Unfortunately years of bullying and cruel liars had turned the smile into something she just couldn't easily trust. It was a powerful gesture, easily capable of placing a person off guard. So she stood in awkward silence, shoe pressing against the ground a few times.

"We could go together" she mumbled, nearly in a whisper. How uncomfortable this was for her!

“Paracetamol? They’re a painkiller, although they’re pretty good for lowering your temperature as well, if you have a fever.” Wolfe told her, wincing a little as he shifted and stood, the wound on his leg stinging painfully. He looked over at Penny who was sniffing around the climbing frame before he looked back at Hanako once again as she gave him the offer for them to go to the pharmacy together. It made him feel quite sympathetic towards her, as he wondered just how long she had been alone. He wondered just what had happened to her, and hoped that fate had not been too cruel to her. She was clearly wary of other people, judging from the way she had greeted him. But then he had hardly been trusting himself. Cautious was the only way to survive in this world. Being cautious, but hopeful.

“I would love that… I’m not familiar with Taiom, if I have to be honest. I’ve only really passed through its train station on my way home from University.” Wolfe said, stepping around the bench again and patting his uninjured thigh to attract Penny’s attention. The canine looked up and trotted over to him, positioning herself by his leg as he indicated for Hanako to follow. As he walked to the gate of the park he said, trying to alleviate some of the tension between them, “I actually come from Havenborough, but I attended Thorndown University in Blackberry Falls. I used to come home every now again to visit my family.” He paused when he got to the gate, slowly opening it up and glancing up and down the empty street. Sometimes when things were this quiet, it made him even more nervous. He stepped out into the path, holding the gate open for the small woman.

As soon as she passed through it, he allowed it to close before he asked, “What about you? Are you familiar with Taiom?” He was hoping that she was, so that she could lead him to the pharmacy. If she was as clueless as he was, then they were both going to end up wandering around the streets hoping they would stumble upon it. He glanced up at the sun again, which suggested that they only had a couple more hours of light left. He vaguely remembered the route back to Zoe, and he sincerely hoped that they wouldn’t get themselves lost. Otherwise they would have to spent the night somewhere, and Wolfe wasn’t comfortable with the idea of leaving Zoe alone for that long. He had already left her alone for longer than he wanted to, but with little idea as to where he was actually going, he had little choice.

She felt a little bad watching Wolfe and Penny. The poor dog just wanted to be friendly. Wolfe was injured. She didn't know either of them very well, but she wasn't someone who was without compassion. Just the opposite actually! However the world had made her distrustful of people and that defense that she put up, her attempt to seem apathetic to things, was often her only protection from the sort of people who might hurt her.

"I'm from Havenborough too. Unfortunately I rarely left it. But I think the pharmacy might be in the shopping area. Taiom is small, right? It would definitely be there, I think."

Hanako wished she could be more useful. But together they stood a much better chance of getting through all this unharmed. Or, at least, not any more harmed than they already were. Then again her wound hadn't really been bugging her too much. Perhaps it was just excitement from meeting new people, or maybe she was just getting used to the pain. Who could say? Wolfe probably could if he took a look.

Maybe I should ask him later. Never can be too safe these days.

In any case she trusted Wolfe to take the lead. It actually made her feel safer. She could keep an eye on him that way. When the gate was opened for her Hanako moved through it first, but she did so sideways so as to keep an eye on the man. One hand remained unknowingly upon her wound while the other settled comfortably upon the handle of her weapon. Partially it was in case Wolfe made a move, but primarily it was for zombies.

As Wolfe looked to the sky so too did the red-headed girl. She had an inkling of what he was concerned about. It was getting late. They had to hurry up and find somewhere to bunker down. Heck, they still had to actually clear out a place to stay, right?

"I hope you have an idea on where we're settling down for the night."

At her suggestion, Wolfe hummed softly as he looked up and down the street. He wasn’t actually sure where the shopping area actually was. His reasoning told him that it was more towards the centre of town of which he knew the vague direction of. Hopefully it wouldn’t take all that long to reach it. A part of him was glad that she was from Havenborough, as it gave them something in common with one another, and it was something familiar that they shared. He wondered if he had ever seen her around the town before, but he was sure he would have remembered someone as unique as her. Especially with such eye catching hair and eyes. If she was a similar age to Zoe, was it possible that they had gone to school together? Even been in the same year as each other? If they were, it would make them trust each other easier. At least he hoped, unless one bullied the other but he couldn’t picture Zoe being a bully and Hanako didn’t look the bullying type either.

At her question, Wolfe glanced at her before saying, “I do. It’s more on the edge of town, though.” He was wondering if he should reveal that he had a sister waiting there for him. He decided to wait until they had left the pharmacy at the very least, when he perhaps trusted her a little more. But then again, with her being with him, there wasn’t the chance that she would run off to cause any trouble for Zoe. However he still wanted to remain on the side of caution.

Wolfe continued to lead them down the street, bringing his finger to his lips to sign for silence. They could talk later, when they were absolutely sure that they were safe in the pharmacy. When moving, it was best to be quiet, especially if there were any Neko’s or Kitsune’s around who could easily hear people talking. Penny trotted at his side, her ears pricked forwards and her entire stance alert. She let out a soft whine causing Wolfe to pause and asked in a soft whisper, “What is it, girl?” Penny looked up at him before glancing around, looking nervous. Wolfe looked around as well, but wasn’t able to spot anything. However he looked back at Hanako and told her in a whisper, “Remain on alert. I think Penny senses something.”

He then continued walking, his hand held close to his weapon. He could feel his muscles becoming taunt to the point of aching, he was that tense. His stomach was rolling in anxiety and every instinct was telling him to run. Unfortunately, he needed to get to that pharmacy. When they reached the end of the street, Wolfe paused and peered around the corner. He could see a few cars, but otherwise there was nothing out of place. In the distance, near the bend of the street he could see a shop, which boded well for what they were after. He turned his head over his shoulder and whispered, “I see a shop. I think we might be close.”

He turned his attention back to the street before them before cautiously moving out and down it. He kept to the edge of the street, his eyes looking everywhere to try and spot any hidden dangers. He made his steps as quiet as possible, keeping his noise level down as much as possible. Beside him, Penny was moving cautiously, her tail tucking between her legs. As he moved past a car that was parked against the pavement, there was a sudden hissing sound and Penny let out a frightened yelp. Wolfe snapped his attention to the dog only to find a half rotten arm emerging from underneath the car and clutching at the dogs hind leg. Without thinking, Wolfe drew his Katana and sliced through the arm. Penny jumped forwards with a whimper, pressing herself against him as the zombie hissed again. He then watched as a Kitsune pulled itself from underneath the car, staring at them with empty eye sockets. The thing shifted, pulling itself to its feet. It then pressed a hand against the car to assist in its standing. To Wolfe’s horror, the contact caused the car alarm to start blaring loudly, echoing around the street. It was soon joined by a symphony of hisses and growls which could only mean one thing. A horde.

“RUN!” He shouted, as it was now completely pointless in trying to remain quiet. Without thinking, he grabbed Hanako by the hand and started running down the street as zombies began to pour out of the woodwork. The shambling creatures were groaning as they mindlessly headed towards the source of the noise. A number of them had not even noticed the three, for which he was grateful. Because Wolfe could see that there were many of them, far too many to count in a glance. But there were more than enough that switched directions, heading straight for them, much to Wolfe’s consternation. He looked around wildly, looking for an escape route, because there was no way they were going to be able to fight off all of these zombies themselves. Their best bet, as always, was to run. It wasn’t out of cowardice, but out of shere self-preservation.

His searching eyes found what he wanted, an alleyway. There were a few zombies that had emerged from it, but they were coming away from it with a shambling gate. Wolfe should considered them lucky that it was only the more common zombies and not anything faster like Wolves. Although they would no doubt be attracted by the noise, making it imperative that they get out of here, “The alleyway!” He called out, keeping a firm grip on Hanako as he pulled her towards it. One of the zombies made a lunge for her but he pulled her close to him, shoving her behind him as he sliced down with his katana, neatly searing its head from its body. He pushed her towards the alley, “Go, now!” He ordered as another zombie shambled close and he whirled his blade to slice off their arm before he kicked them solidly in the chest. The zombie let out a hissing growl as it stumbled backwards and fell into another zombie which fell to the ground. He began to move backwards, keeping a defensive stance to protect the Hanako and Penny.

Another zombie came at him from the side, clawing at his jacket. Thankfully, the leather protected him from the scratching nails but the momentum caused him to stumble back. He tried to bring his sword arm up, but wasn’t able to, as the zombie was keeping his arm pinned to his side. He tried to push it off, but it relentlessly clung to him, hissing in his face. Pain then laced up his leg and the muscles quivered before his leg gave way and he fell to the ground. He tried to use his free hand to cushion his fall, but he heard a clear snapping sound and pain raced up his arm. It took him a moment to realise that his wrist had been broken when he fell and he cursed his bad luck. The zombies tried to converge on him, to take advantage of him, but he rolled out of their way and jumped to his feet before he ran towards the alleyway, hoping that Hanako was already there with Penny.

While she followed behind the man Hanako took some time to inspect him. Tall, handsome, dressed cool, white hair. She didn't really recognize him. But he did look older too. The only older people she ever really hung out with were her parents and her defense instructor. That would explain why she hadn't seen him. But his coming from Havenborough also gave a possible explanation into why her supplies had gone missing from various stash houses. Honestly she wouldn't mind if he were responsible. At least, not yet. Getting to know him better may prove otherwise.

He had a place to bunk for the night. That was good. It meant they could relax a little more during their search. Still, it did feel a little weird. She had attended maybe one or two sleepovers before when she actually was in school, sure, but those had been with other girls when she was younger. A night alone with a stranger, especially a man? That was new. Her parents certainly wouldn't approve. But then the entire world had been spun around on its head.

I think that is the saying. Maybe.

Penny let out a worried whine. Dogs were great at sensing things. It put Hanako on edge. But if it was just one or two zombies then they should be fine. Hopefully that was all it was. Shops became visible as well. Not the one they were searching for but it meant they were in the right area. It did mean crossing a street, but as usual she stopped at the corner of the nearest building and looked both ways twice before venturing out. Nothing was going to get the drop on her. Not if she could help it!

HISSSS!

She jumped slightly, turning to the yelping made by Penny. In a flash her machete was drawn, shakily gripped by her right hand. Wolfe was quick enough to sever the creature's arm. Something had grabbed the poor dog from beneath a car. Unfortunately that something was a Kitsune. Worse still, it set off a car alarm. A wave of hissing seemed to erupt from all around them. Creatures started to crawl out from hiding spots.

Hanako was transported back to the day she lost her first group. It hadn't been a car alarm which brought them into danger. Maria was pregnant. They were moving to a new hideout, an empty brick police station which they'd found. It would have protected them well. But the woman started to go into labor. Just right there in the street. The noises attracted a zombie. A kitsune. It bit James. He screamed. More were summoned. A horde. Gunfire brought more still. Jackie was overrun and torn to pieces. Gunther ran out of ammunition, but he'd managed to get their attention. Maria tripped and that was all the time needed for a neko to catch up. The baby never stood a chance, never even got a name. There was so much blood. She never saw what happened to James but she assumed that he got overrun. Tim and Samantha ran with her, almost made it too. They went into an alleyway. There had been a crawlspace small enough for her and just high enough for her to enter with some help. She was the first one lifted up. Tim tried to help Samantha up too. But she was too big. Maybe if she had more time she could have squeezed inside, but Tim was dragged off into the wriggling mass of rotten flesh. Hanako held on for as long as she could while the older woman screamed in her face, begged her not to let go, to help her inside. She tried. She really did. She tried as hard as she could. But Hanako wasn't strong. Her grip gave out. Wet crunching and groaning and hissing and ripping and tearing filled her nightmares for weeks afterwards. Now it all came back to her in force.

Wolfe's yelling and the hard tug against her hand brought Hanako back to reality. Tears stung at the corners of her eyes. She ran with him, swiping out with her machete at any undead who neared them. The tip of her blade caught against one of their chests, but otherwise her companion did a fine job of keeping them ahead of the growing crowd. She could keep up with him of course, in fact she was probably faster given the man's wound. But she didn't want to let go of his hand. She didn't want to lose another person.

An alleyway. Her past was creeping up on her, or at least it felt that way. A knot formed in her gut. She felt sick. And then she was pulled right in close to the man, body tensing up in reaction. What was that for? She was pushed away a second later, stumbling into the alleyway. When she looked back she spotted the zombie which had nearly snagged her. Hanako's heart started to race within her chest. She'd nearly been grabbed. That probably would have been the end of her. The idea made her feel worse, but she did her best to keep it down. With a quick nod of her head she turned, rushing into the alleyway ahead of him. There was a chain fence. Penny had already reached it. Thankfully there was a space on the bottom where the dog could fit through. It just needed to be a little bigger. So she hustled over, grabbed tightly onto the metal wire, and pulled upwards with all of her might, hoping to open up more space for the dog to fit underneath! Once she had made it through Hanako leaped upwards, climbing swiftly over the obstruction, pulling herself over the top and to the other side!

But now she stopped on the other side of the fence, nervously bouncing in place while she watched Wolfe. If he could make it over then they could get away, right?! Her machete was sheathed. Quickly she leaped back onto the fence, scrambling up to the top in case he needed help getting over! She wasn't strong, but maybe she could help a little bit if it came down to it! Right?

"H-hurry! Over the fence!"

When Wolfe ran into the alley way, he was relieved to see that there was a chain link fence. He was even more relieved to see that Penny was on the other side, and Hanako was on top of the fence, shouting at him to hurry. She didn’t need to tell him twice. He ignored the burning wound on his leg and the dull throbbing of his wrist, as he ran towards the fence. He heard a loud hissing from straight behind him, and without thinking he turned around and lashed out with his katana. The zombie let out a scream as he sheared their head in half. The corpse dropped down to the floor, the rotten flesh twitching. He could see that they were quickly gaining ground on him, so he had to move fast if he hoped to make it. He turned around, risking putting his katana away as he approached the fence. He jumped up, clinging onto it with his good arm. He gritted his teeth as he used his boots to push through the holes in the fence and climb up, having to balance himself as he moved his good hand up further to grip even more of the fence to haul himself up. He was glad that he was physically strong enough to easily pull up his own weight, otherwise he would be moving a lot slower. Penny began to bark, and he strangely found the sound encouraging, as if she was shouting at him to hurry up, to be safe.

Even still, he felt hands fumbling with his feet and he kicked out before pulling himself out of their range as he pulled himself up to the top of the fence. He threw his good arm over the top of the fence, giving Hanako a fierce grin before he allowed her to help him raise himself further before swinging a leg over. He then climbed down the other side, dropping down on his knees to the ground with a heavy breath as he tried to calm his rapidly beating heart. He heard Penny let out a relieved whimper as she licked his face, clearly happy that he had managed to get out of there. That was the closest he had ever been to death, and his first experience with a horde. He had known about them, and had hoped to have to never encounter one. But it seemed that today was both his lucky, and unlucky day. It just figures that the day when he found someone to be company, they ran almost headlong into a horde.

Slowly, he stood up, turning around where the zombies were clawing at the fence, hissing and snarling at the three of them. He then looked behind him to make sure that there were no zombies in their way, and was relieved when there wasn’t one, “Come on. We should get out of here.” He said, limping towards the exit of the alley. The wound on his leg burned even fiercer now, and he knew that he had sprained it with all the running. But if he had a choice between his leg hurting more, and death, he would rather have the inconvenience of the leg. When they reached the end of the alley, Wolfe motioned for the others to stop before he peered out into the street. He would see some zombies moving at the end, heading towards where the horde was, taking the long route around. His eyes then roamed down the street and his eyes fell upon one of the shops that had ‘Taiom Pharmacy Dispensary’ written in clear letters.

“Hanako! We found the pharmacy!” He whispered in excitement before he pushed himself off of the wall. He had forgotten about his wrist, and hissed when a sharp stab of pain shot up his arm, making it feel as if his hand had gone completely numb. He winced a little, “Shit. I broke my wrist… hopefully we’ll find a splint or something in the pharmacy. If not, I can try and improvise one.” He said before he stepped out of the alley. Glancing around, looking out for not only zombies but humans too, he quietly made his way across the barron street. When he reached it, he used his good hand to grip the handle and pushed it. He found it unlocked, causing him to frown,

“It’s possible that this place has already been raided. Let’s try and find what we can.” He said, keeping his voice low. It made sense that this place was already looted. It was an important place to get supplies, after all. He stepped into the shop, eyes glancing around at the mess that littered the place. He winced a little. People clearly went to town on this place. He moved further in, watching where he was placing his feet to avoid making more noise than he needed to. His eyes were searching, looking for anything untampered. It seemed as if a horde of zombies had been through here, tearing the place up. He paused at the area where there were usually bandages, but couldn’t see any, much to his annoyance. He sighed before he turned to Hanako and whispered, “I’m going out back, to see what I can find.” He then turned and moved behind the counter to the door that lead into the drug room. Honestly, he wasn’t very hopeful that he would find anything, but he had to try.

With his good hand, he ruffled through the shelves, picking up empty boxes before flinging them aside. Why were people leaving the boxes? It seemed a little pointless to him. Finally, he picked up one that wasn’t empty and turned it over to see that it was Amoxicillin, a general purpose antibiotic. He had to bite his tongue to stop himself from cheering, as this was exactly what he needed to help make sure that Zoe made a full recovery. With the main shock of the wound over, the only worry he had was an infection, and he could stop that with this medicine. He shrugged his backpack off and put the antibiotics inside. He then turned and continued searching through the drug shelves.

“I really miss them…”

Wolfe jumped at the sound of a small girls voice and turned around, but he wasn’t able to see anything. He frowned, his eyes slowly searching the room around him. The fact that he couldn’t see anything made him unsure if what he heard was actually there. He moved to the door and looked out to see Hanako and Penny moving around, looking for anything useful. He drew back, his frown deepening. The voice didn’t sound like Hanako. It sounded too young. Child-like. He shook his head, deciding to dismiss it for now. Perhaps it was the stress, and lack of satisfying sleep catching up with him. He quickly moved through the shelves, before he came across another box that was hidden underneath a tray. His eyes went wide when he saw that it was a single treatment of Necrotacin, the antibiotic that could save one of them from going full zombie. He eagerly grabbed it and stuff it in his bag. He then finished his search before picking up his backpack and leaving the drug room,

“I found two kinds of antibiotics. Amoxicillin and Necrotacin. That will be very useful. Did you find anything of use?” He asked, hoping that she would come back with bandages or a splint. Penny trotted up to him, her tail wagging as she held a little dinosaur toy in her mouth. He smiled at her and petted her on the head before scratching her behind the ears affectionately.

He made it! Oh goodness that was too close.

Hanako sat up on the fence as Wolfe climbed his way up. The man smiled at her, but she didn't smile back. No, she was still in a little bit of shock over the whole situation. If anything her face was a mixture of relief but also still very much horrified. She did her best to help him over the fence. Then, carefully, she swung her leg over, dropping to the safe side below. The short red-head stumbled a bit as she landed, pressing herself against the nearest wall for balance. It was a good time to catch her breath.

A trembling hand moved over her heart. It still drummed rapidly within her chest. She just wanted to go at this point, to settle on down for the night with some friendly company. Who knows, maybe they even had hot water for a bath? Heck, she'd take running water period. Even a cold bath would be fine. Or a shower. It'd be chilly, sure, especially with the time needed to clean out her hair, but she was totally fine with that.

As Wolfe started to limp away Hanako pushed herself to a straightened position, following quickly behind the man. His limping certainly was a concern, but then he'd hurt his wrist as well. They really needed to get somewhere safe. But medicine was even more vitally important now too. Thankfully their luck started to look up! As soon as they exited the alleyway they managed to spot the pharmacy! It was only one more street to cross. She stopped to look both ways, as she always did, before following after her new companion.

The door was unlocked. She agreed with his suspicions that it must have been raided by this point. Thankfully she was really good at finding supplies in places one might not think to look. When they entered she split off from him, keeping one hand near her weapon though not yet drawing it. Her steps were careful, quiet, with amber eyes constantly moving, taking in her surroundings. This was the perfect hiding place for a kitsune. They'd already run into one today. With any luck it wouldn't happen again.

After making the rounds Hanako would head towards what seemed to be the messiest aisle. Then, slowly, she lowered herself face first onto the ground, turning her head. While in a hurry people tended to not notice the things they dropped. Sometimes things ended up sliding right underneath the display stands! People generally didn't check there. Hanako did. Often times it was the first place she checked for that very reason.

Low and behold she was right! Underneath three different sections she found some useful medicines. A box each of aspirin, co-codamol, and ibuprofen! They were unopened, guaranteeing that they had every dose still available. She actually managed a smile, lifting the front of her wool sweater in order to utilize it as a pouch for the medicines while she conducted her search. When she'd finished she ventured over to check on Wolfe. A sigh of relief left her when she noticed that both he and Penny seemed to be, well, still around. Fine was a little strong considering Wolfe's current condition.

"A box of aspirin. A box of co-codamol. And a box of ibuprofen. I think we've probably cleaned this place out. We should head to the safe place now. You need to get fixed up."

The medicines were tucked into her satchel. She removed them from the boxes, tossing them aside. They would fit better that way. It was probably the reason why people left them in the first place. When Penny returned with a toy Hanako found herself smiling yet again. It was cute. Cute was good. They needed more cute in the world. But they also needed to get moving. So her gaze returned to Wolfe, ready to follow his lead.

Wolfe’s eyes lit up in delight at her list of medicines. None of them were bandages, of which he had hoped for, but they were still very useful. Especially the Co-Codamol, as Codeine was an Opium based painkiller. Just what Zoe needed right now. He nodded his head slightly at her last statement. He couldn’t deny the truth of that. Perhaps when they got back she could help him salvage for a splint. There was plenty of cloth material around that they could utilise into makeshift bandages such as blankets and abandoned clothes. They won’t be sterile but it would have to do. They didn’t have enough water in which to boil, unless by some miracle the house still had water in its tank. Perhaps he should check on that when they got back. A fire was risky, though, as the Wolves could smell it. But it would allow them to boil bandages. As well as the dirty water that Wolfe had on him, to make it more drinkable.

“Yes… that’s a good idea. I’ll fix you up as well.” Wolfe said, indicating with his good hand her side, “I can stitch with one hand if I need to, if it’s a simple cut that needs it.” He added, knowing that if he had broken his wrist before Zoe had been injured, he might not have been able to save her life. He couldn’t even bare that thought. He really hoped that Hanako could help him get together a split so he could gain back some functionality in his arm.

He took a deep breath before moving over to the front door of the shop, slowly opening it to peer outside. Other than the noise that the horde were generating, it all seemed quiet. It appeared that the horde was both a curse and a blessing. Due to the noise they were generating, it was easier for them to move around, as the zombies would all be converging on the horde. It made it larger in size, but it kept attention off of others. He looked down the street where he had spotted zombies to see that it was devoid of them. His blue eyes moved towards the alleyway, but he knew for a fact that, that escape route was a death trap. He then looked down the other side of the street to see that it was deserted. He was about to try and sneak down the risky route of where he had seen the zombies earlier, but paused when he noticed a house down the street. He stared at it for a few moments, frowning slightly before he realised that he had seen it before. Or rather, the otherside. It had been on the end of the street where the park had been, where it had bent into the street there the horde was gathered. If they were able to break into the house, they could use it as a means to get to the park street. He certainly new the way back from there.

“This way.” He whispered to Hanako before he stepped out of the shop. He kept the door open, allowing Penny and Hanako to step through before he moved off down the street. Penny, with her toy still clutched firmy in her mouth, came to heel and moved at the same pace as he did, making sure that the side with his broken wrist was covered. Wolfe felt that it was somehow very easy to underestimate the intelligence of dogs, but he figured that Penny had to have some kind of brain in her head to have not only survived for a year on her own, but to realise that his wrist was a detriment, and thus keep his weakest side covered. He wished he had some treats which he could give her. But the best thing he could do right now, is allow her to keep the toy she had found.

The small group reached the house, greeted by the back door fence. Wolfe stopped, holding his ear against it as he listened carefully. He heard something moving around, but it didn’t sound like a zombie. It was too small. Slowly, and as quietly as he could, he opened the unlocked gate and peered inside. His eyes peered through the slim gap, searching for the source of the sounds within. After a few moments, he found a scruffy looking feline that was searching around in the garden, clearly looking for something to eat. It didn’t look like a zombie, merely like a feral cat. He opened the fence door a little further, causing the animal to jump before letting out a low hiss as it ran to the side of the garden and jumped up the wall before disappearing over it.

“False alarm.” He muttered before fully opening the gate and allowing the three inside before closing the gate. He then moved over to the back door to test to see if it was locked. To his relief, and somewhat trepidation, it wasn’t. Cautiously, he pushed open the door, keeping a sharp ear out. He was glad that his hearing was sharper than what was usual for humans. He held the door still, listening carefully. There was absolute silence. So if there was someone inside, they must be holding very still. Possibly spooked by the horde. A smart idea. It also gave them the chance to sneak through the house. He looked over his shoulder at Hanako and whispered, “Be very quiet. The horde is still close by. So don’t make any more noise than necessary. We’re not going to bother searching through this house. We’re just going to cut through it.”

He turned back, opening the back door further and stepping inside. He glanced at Penny who seemed taunt, but otherwise she was making no sound. Carefully, Wolfe stepped into the small conservatory. His eyes darted everywhere, training on the spots where Kitsune’s could hide. He then moved through into the kitchen, seeing that it already looked well looted. Most of the cupboards were open and things were scattered about. Stepping carefully, Wolfe made his way through the mess into a hallway where he could see the front door directly in front of them. He peered at the other doors of the hallway, seeing that only one of them was open. Carefully, he moved towards it and peered inside, his eyes glancing around. He then froze when he saw a Kitsune curled up underneath a desk, shifting a little. Thankfully, it was facing away from the door, so it didn’t see him.

Wolfe gulped a little before very slowly reaching forwards and gripping the door handle. As silently as he could, he closed the door. He looked over his shoulder and mouthed ‘Kitsune’ at Hanako before putting a finger on his lips to command absolute silence. He looked back towards their main goal; the front door. Keeping his steps as silent as possible, he stepped towards the door on silent steps before slowly opening the front door to the garden in front. He peered through it, looking down the street to the right to see the horde of zombies gathered around the the alarmed car which continued blaring. He looked out to the street in front of him, seeing the park where he had met Hanako and to his relief it was as empty as it was earlier.

He slipped out of the door, Penny following closely before he moved up the garden path. His slow steps made his limp less noticeable but it didn’t stop the pain as it jarred up his leg. He paused at the end, reaching out and petting Penny on the side gently, as much for his own comfort as for hers. He then darted out of the garden across the street, moving as fast as he could until he reached the bend of the street with Penny moving swiftly by his side, keeping low to the ground. There, he paused and waited for Hanako to join him. He leaned against the wall, catching his breath and trying to keep his mind off of the pain that stabbed from his leg, and the dull throb of pain from his wrist. He couldn’t wait to get back to their hideout, eat something and settle in for the night. And it was nice to have company in the form of Hanako, although he still had yet to tell her about Zoe. He would do that later, when they got there. He just couldn’t be bothered right now. He just wanted to get somewhere safe. As soon as Hanako joined him, he would lead her back to their hideout.

Location: Small Park, Suburbs, Taiom, Ashaea.

Her new companion's face seemed to light up with happiness! It seemed that she'd done a fine job. Such things were contagious too and soon she too had a slight smile. But it was quickly wiped away. He was still a stranger. She couldn't open up too much. Not yet anyways. He certainly was growing on her though. Perhaps it was Penny's presence. That had to help a little bit.

Hanako's wound was pointed out to her, prompting her to look towards it. It actually didn't hurt too much anymore, but letting him check it out would be a good idea regardless. Her head nodded once in agreement, however she was more concerned about him. After all he'd messed up his wrist and still had a nasty leg wound to contend with. She really hoped he'd make it through with her. It'd be nice to have someone to speak to, even if she didn't really do very much of it.

She was actually a little impressed with Wolfe's claim. He could sew up a wound with one hand? He must have been a very skilled doctor before everything broke out. Of course they would be in desperately short supplies these days. It gave him plenty of leverage should someone unsavory end up capturing him. Unfortunately Hanako had nothing like that. At least, nothing she could think of save for the obvious, but even then she was somewhat lacking. Picking up another skill would certainly be useful, however doing so now was next to impossible.

Closely she followed behind the man, trusting in his lead. Her right hand drew forth her machete, keeping it at the ready. Who knows what they might run into. It took a few moments for her companion to gain his bearing before he signaled her to follow. The door was kept open for her. She didn't know if he was just being a gentleman or what, but it was kind of nice. Her head nodded once in gratitude while she exited past him. Hanako kept herself as low as she could, eyes darting about and head moving on a swivel in order to make certain their surroundings were clear of zombies. She waited for the man to take lead again before she followed once more, keeping on the side opposite of Penny. If anything moved to ambush them then they'd have an advantageous defensive pattern. Probably.

They arrived at a house. She pressed against it nearby. Wolfe was listening in for others, so she kept an eye out for anybody who might approach them from behind. She heard a noise inside, a hiss. It sent shivers down her spine. Was it a neko? No. As it turned out it was just a cat. A brief glance was paid towards Penny. The dog had far more discipline than she'd ever imagine. Typically they'd bark in such a situation, right? Yet Penny remained quiet. Not even a muffled yip from behind her toy.

What a good dog.

Quietly she crept inside, keeping close to Wolfe. Not a single noise was made by the girl. She was already quite adept at this sort of thing, even her breathing was unconsciously controlled for these situations. A single nod was her only response to the man. Silence was easy for her, normal even. He didn't need to tell her, but then they had just met so she understood his reasoning for it. If she were alone she probably would have risked searching the house, but he was actually probably right not to. Any mistake could bring the horde to them. More and more she was glad that she'd met this man.

Through the house they moved, carefully drifting from one room to another. Any objects on the ground were avoided. Hanako figured that it was much akin to moving through a field of landmines, only these were actually visible. In the hallway Wolfe paused to peer inside of a room. His face flashed with fear. The little red head subconsciously held her machete closer, blade pointed in the direction of the door. Wolfe closed it off and informed her of what she'd already guessed: there was a kitsune. Poor things. They always seemed to be scared. Perhaps they knew something that the others didn't? It was a bit scary to think about.

Soon they were out of the house. A sigh of relief was breathed. Out here she could get away from any zombie. Cramped within a house? They definitely had an advantage there. Only one needed to grab her and it'd be all over from there. Regardless, they now crossed the park at a quick pace, passing across a street. As usual she checked both directions before bolting out after Wolfe. When she caught up to him she gave him a brief nod, signalling that she was all good. Of course she wasn't really out of breath. This level of activity was normal for her. But then Wolfe was also pretty hurt so she didn't really think any worse of him for it.

I can't wait until we're somewhere safe. I'm sure we have plenty to talk about!

This is something I've been wanting for well over a year. Perhaps even 2 years. My character is an anthropomorphic Cinccino, a Pokémon hunted for their fur nearly to extinction. He has tried desperately to find some way to bring his species back, but has had no success. Worse yet, his goal has cost him everything. His job, his money, his trainer license,... all gone. But he keeps trying. That's where you hopefully come in.
I won't mince words. What I'm looking for is someone capable of granting this poor fluffball the fertility he wants so badly. I would prefer it not happen via sex, as I am terrible at writing sex scenes. However, as I have been looking for quite some time, I may be willing to bend that rule. But I would much rather he come across some magical creature, such as Jirachi, a fertility deity of some sort, Kyubey, a kitsune,... anything that can grant wishes or dish out curses. Either they hear his wish and take pity on him, or they find him and, not knowing him, cast a fertility curse on him. I should also note that I'm not looking for simple mpreg. I want massive litters; how else will he repopulate his species?~
I would greatly appreciate help from anybody. But I can't do long posts consistently.
      This is a Cinccino.

Warning: This Side Story will contain scenes of a graphic nature. This includes, but is not limited to, extreme violence and gore. If you find either of these themes distasteful, then please do not read. This thread will not contain any sex; it is an adventure thread.
      Participants: Daedrin and Izanagi
Description: After Izanagi found a mysterious sword in the forest, he approached Deadrin to have it repaired however lacked the funds required to repair the sword. So the two came to an agreement that if Izanagi went into the Rosayia Forest and got his hands on Kraerhil, a rare exotic metal used in sword making, Daedrin would pay him for however much he retrieved. After some discussion, Daedrin agreed to accompany him on this quest as well to be a guide through the forest as well as to get their hands on more.
      -x-x-x-x-x-x-x-
Once Izanagi joined him, Daedrin gave him a nod to show his approval before he turned back towards the forest. It seemed a little too quiet for his tastes, and he already had a gut feeling that they were going to encounter something very soon. But then he had inherited his Fathers tendency to get into trouble. He snorted a little in amusement at that though, the sound soft enough not to be overheard by Izanagi. Daegrin stirred a little restlessly, and Daedrin stroked his neck gently,
“Daegrin senses that there’s something nearby. Let’s move, and keep an eye out.” Daedrin said in warning as he kicked Daegrin’s flanks lightly causing the Aelda to move forwards slightly, heading along the river. Daedrin pulled out his sword, not wanting to be caught completely off guard. He could cut their travel time down by cutting through the forest, but it was rather dangerous due to the fact that the more dangerous monsters lived deeper inside the forest. He didn’t fear being lost, as his sense of direction was as good as any Eldyrannth, allowing him to navigate the forest with ease without being caught in never-ending circles. Daedrin cast an eye up at the sun, seeing that it was the mid-afternoon so they had at least a few hours of travelling time left in the day before they even considered settling down for the night. His eyes returned to the forest, watching it carefully as he strained his ears for anything.
In the end, he wasn’t able to see or hear anything. But he could smell something with his sharp nose. He opened his mouth slightly, inhaling sharply before snapping his mouth shut as he resisted the urge to evacuate the contents of his stomach. The stench of rotting flesh pervaded the air, getting stronger by the moment. Daegrin stirred again, snorting in a challenging manner. Daedrin looked over at Izanagi, “We have company. There are ghouls nearby…” He said, before casting his mind out around them, careful to avoid going close to Izanagi’s just in case the man could sense the touch of telepathy. He could sense at least five of the bastards that were homing in on their direction. He pulled his mind back, shifting the grip on his sword to be more comfortable.
There was a sudden growl from the bushes as something leapt out towards Daedrin. The figure was completely naked, and was so emaciated that it would have been mistaken for a reanimated skeleton if it wasn’t for the rotting pieces of flesh that clung to its body. Its hands, although human-like, looked like claws with filthy black fingernails. Its cheeks were gaunt, as its eye sockets were sunken into its face as the eyes gave them a gormless look that was filled with an insatiable hunger. Its jaw was hanging low, only attached by a few thin threads of flesh, as its tongue dangled from its mouth. As it flew through the air, Daegrin jumped to the side as Daedrin swung his blade in an arch. The silver blade easily sunk through the flesh of its neck, chopping its head off. The body tumbled to the ground as the head sailed further through the air before rolling into some bushes.
The remaining four ghouls appeared, snarling at the two of them. Daedrin glanced at Izanagi before returning his gaze to the rotting creatures. Two of them completely ignored him and leapt towards Izanagi, leaving Daedrin dealing with the remaining two. One of them leapt forwards, but Daegrin danced out of the way before twisting around and kicking out with his powerful hint-quarters. Daedrin could hear the snapping of bones as the ghoul was kicked back at its companion, knocking them both to the ground. Daegrin turned around just as the two scrambled to their feet and lunged again. Daedrin brought down his sword, the sharp blade slicing down through its skull and into what remained on its brain causing it to become limp and drop to the floor, dead. Unfortunately, his blade seemed content to remain lodged within its skull despite how hard he tugged it. The third creature leapt up towards him, intending on pushing him out of his saddle. Daedrin tugged at his sword more, but it refused to move. He turned his head towards the creature, intending on using telekinesis to deflect it however Daegrin reared up with an angry whinny. He lashed out with his front legs, knocking the ghoul down onto the floor. Before it could even get up, Daegrin brought his polished hooves down and began to stamp the monster into the ground until it lay lifeless beneath him, as if the Aelda took the danger it posed as a personal affront. This gave Daedrin enough time to pull his foot from his stirrup and use the strength of his leg to push the ghoul off of his sword. He then turned in his saddle to see how Izanagi was fairing.
