The residents starting as regular people, eventually transitioning into soldiers, those soldiers became chiefs, those chiefs would continue to recruit more men and fight the opposing forces to no end. The battles had one terrifying thing about them, and that was because no one knew why they started. They just attacked, and naturally the rest of the world joined in.
