I've been thinking about this one, and I have to say... not guilty. Even the worst movies can be entertaining in a weird way (MST3K anyone?). I also can't help but really dig some badfilm and sleaze sometimes. My brain must just be wired wrong. The next person would rather be somewhere else right now.

You make your choice in an instant and dart into the second room, making immediately for the hidden passage. Your feet barely skim the stone as you pivot sharply, lunging through the open doorway to your left. The room is a wreck, its once-grand furniture smashed to splinters, books and papers scattered across the floor. Dust swirls in the air, disturbed by your frantic movements. Behind you, the knight’s boots thunder down the stairs. "Now, now, Princess. I see you!" Your hands fly to the bookshelf, trailing along the carved wood until... there. Your fingers find the notch, pressing inward with all your strength. Click. The shelf groans open, revealing the narrow, pitch-dark passage beyond. Without hesitation, you dive inside, pulling the edge of the bookshelf shut behind you. Darkness engulfs you. You press yourself against the stone wall, heart hammering, listening. "Where did you go?" The knight’s voice is inside the room you just left, dripping with amusement, but you hear the frustration beneath it. He’s close. You hold your breath. You hear nothing for a beat, but then... a crash. He overturns furniture, kicks something aside, muttering curses under his breath. He doesn’t know about the passage. Not yet. You hear his boots move away, his voice fading as he searches elsewhere. He doesn’t know where you are. You are safe, for now. The air in the passage is musty and cold, the scent of damp stone and dust wrapping around you. The walls are narrow, pressing in on either side as you take a tentative step forward, then another. Somewhere in the distance, water drips. The sound echoes too loud in the confined space. You know these passages, you used to play in them a a child. Once you found one, the maze of hidden corridors became your playground, to the consternation of your nanny and your fathers' staff. But in the dark, memory and reality are two different things. The passages run through and beneath the castle, a maze of concealed corridors and twisting stairwells behind hidden doors. You should remember, but it's been a long time since you've been inside the passages in this wing of the castle. You come to a fork. Stairs lead down to the left, toward the lower levels, deeper into the bowels of the castle, and to the right another passage leads toward the library, near the outer halls and a chance at escape. If you go down you might find supplies, a weapon, a way to survive longer in hiding. If you go out you might find a way to escape entirely. You make your choice in an instant. The door at the end of the hall. Every instinct screams that the quickest way out is straight ahead, no hesitation. You sprint forward, feet pounding against the stone floor, breath ragged in your throat. The ruined hallway stretches before you, littered with shattered furniture, torn banners, and broken weapons. The air is thick with the smell of ash, blood, and something burning. Behind you, the knight is still coming. His boots thunder against the stairs, his laughter rolling through the corridor like a predator toying with his prey. "Run, little princess. Run faster." You don't look back. You slam your shoulder into the heavy wooden doors at the end of the hall, and they burst open, spilling you into the day outside. The cool air hits your skin, and for the briefest moment, you think you’ve made it. You’re free. Then you see them. Soldiers. A dozen of them, waiting just beyond the steps, their armor gleaming under the moonlight. Their surcoats bear the sigil of House Edrington, the golden lion standing proud against a field of deep blue. You skid to a halt, your breath freezing in your throat. Too many. Too well-armed. One of them spots you first, his eyes widening. "The princess!" he shouts. The others turn. Swords are drawn as they close in, and behind you, the knight still closing in. You're trapped. Your mind races, thinking through possibilities as you quickly look around. The soldiers move in. If you want to jump from the stairs and down the sloping side of the castle toward the gardens, through the hedge maze, and lose them in the forest beyond, click here. <link forthcoming> If you want to try to get down the stairs and head right toward the stables, hoping there’s still a horse left and ride your way to freedom, click here. <link forthcoming> If you surrender to the group of soldiers and throw yourself on their mercy, click here. <link forthcoming>

I feel like we've turned this into "TTRPG game building" instead of world-building, because we're both focusing on mechanics and what to roll, etc. Which, you know, I'm having a blast, but I think we might be leaving anyone else who wants to participate in the dust? Maybe I'm wrong. I'd like to take a step back from that, and just make the world. Once we know what the world is, how things work, we can pick a system that fits, or design one around what we want. So we have: The world is a globe. There are no detectable gods. They might be there, they might be made up, but nobody knows for sure. (although some cultures may ascribe various elemental powers to "gods") The world is based on elements, and everyone is attuned to one element. Void (the core harmony of the universe, the formless potential at The Source), Air, Water, Life (biology, botany, things that grow and are bound by the order of their structure), Earth, Fire. The elements map to "abilities": Void = Mental Strength/Willpower; Air = Intellect; Water = Strength; Life = Empathy/Wisdom; Earth = Constitution/Toughness; Fire = Agility The elements are the basis of "magic", and also the basis for schools of martial arts, trades, everything. Everyone is attuned in an element and strong in an element, not necessarily always the same element. Magic can be enhanced with rituals (longer duration, adding more mages, etc.), totems/focus items, sacrifices, strong emotions, etc. Each culture would likely have their own ways of doing things. Questions we have not yet answered: As we start looking at who lives here, are humans present or is everything here unique to it? Was there some other civilization(s) that fell in eons past, and little trinkets of technology remain to confound magical philosophers and theorists? (I'm looking at you, Tekumel...) And if there was an ancient civilization, was its collapse the slow work of entropy or an apocalyptic disaster that gave rise to the current world. What kinds of rituals (coming of age, religious, etc.) are there around people discovering which element they're attuned to? What societies exist because the members are strong in certain elements?

Guilty. There are just too many good things to eat to have a favorite. But I feel that way about favorite anything. Favorites are too hard for me. I like too much stuff. The next person has a favorite movie.

Not guilty. I could eat a burger a day! Next person loves peanut butter and jelly!

As a little kid, always guilty... the controller still had wires! Since I had my own place and wireless controllers, not guilty. The next person doesn't like tuna fish sandwiches.
-
Not guilty, although I wish I were. I have to travel some for work, and my girlfriend drags me out far more often than I'd normally go out on my own. The next person loves bean bag chairs!

I love this - streamlined, unique, and still functional and fun! Here's the idea this sparked for me - yes, everyone CAN use magic, but without training they lack the skill to properly manipulate the power they can call up. They might be more like... I don't know - untrained superheroes, with wild explosions of power having catastrophic effects on the world around them. If that were the case, there would almost certainly be some kind of "coming of age" ritual that identifies everyone's capability, and groups that seek powerful people to mold to their own purposes. There would probably even be groups that specialize in each element who search out the ones they want, like jedi taking children who are strong in the force to train. You also gave me another idea. If you are strong in one element, but have an affinity for another, there should be different applications for such things. For instance, if you're strong in water but ruled by fire, perhaps you have a strange "quenching" affinity, the worlds' natural firemen. But if you're strong in fire but ruled by water, perhaps you have a steam affinity. I'm not sure how they'd all map out, but it just struck me as an interesting concept. Obviously the most powerful would be those whose affinity and strength match. I imagine that, like Dresden Files, you have a few things you've done so often, from your training, through your adult life, that they become your "go to" tools. A fire mage may have a "flamethrower" spell that he can just blast off at enemies because he's done it so many times, practiced it, worked on it over and over until the forms, words, emotions, whatever is required can be called upon without a second thought. Maybe you have so many points to split up for these "rote spells" that you just know off the bat - you could have a lot of low level magic, or a very few, very powerful rote spells.

Not guilty. Laptop. I don't do much from my phone - work pays for it and I don't trust that they won't check what craziness I'm up to on it. The next person has a job-related benefit that they like (like you get to take home a meal at the end of your shift, or work pays for your cell phone, or you have a company car!)

Marry to add to our group harem so we can all just play when the mood takes us -
I'd put a timer on it - if you haven't replied within X days, we'll progress the scene assuming your character takes the most logical/character appropriate action. Otherwise, these things have a way of withering on the vine when one person doesn't respond for a while.
