Just because I can never sit quietly and let other people figure out their own characters... If you're playing a European character knowledgeable in esoteric sex magic, you might also get some inspiration from the reputation of the Khlysty heresy, which would have been in its last decades around this time. The basic idea was "God is glorified by forgiving sins, therefore, the more we sin, the more God is glorified. Amen *start the orgy*" Other takes are that it was sort of the same logic as 'the Purge', "everybody get together and sin your hearts out for a night because we have to be godly the rest of the week." Ok. I'll try not to keep3 points

I'm adding @AsBloodTurnsEverCold to this Group 1. He's on board with the original concept and likes what's been discussed here so far, so... welcome aboard! And with that, we're full up in Game 1.3 points

I will probably take it as a trait, magic and not sure what else probably manipulative or charismatic. As you know I enjoying playing Dominant of dubious morality and I feel wealth/sense of entitlement fits well with that idea. It will probably be less of an expy of Crowley and more my take on the idea.3 points

/beginrant Moderators should really be able to move posts in their own clubs. smh. /endrant There is a trait in the distinction/trait list called "Wealthy". Cortex Dramatic isn't really designed to track resources so in general, if you want your character to be filthy rich with a mansion and staff of servants... they get it. Then during gameplay, if something seems like a thing that character would have, they just have it. If you need to buy things and you're rich, you buy them. But if you want something to add mechanical weight to an argument, you spend a plot point and create a d8 Resource for it. Example: Let's say t3 points

What I mean by “Goofy Slapstick Steampunk Tropes” is nothing silly just for the sake of silliness. Steampunk embodies a wide spectrum, from gritty gears-and-smoke realism to over-the-top silliness. For this campaign, we’re leaning toward the dramatic, weird, gothic end of the scale (Mary Shelley, Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, Poe), and away from the cartoon comedy end. Examples of what I'm not going for: Silly gadgets like a steam-powered top hat that shoots lasers, an umbrella that turns into a pogo stick, or monocles that shoot lightning beams just because it’s funny. Cartoon logic, like jetpacks made from tea kettles, mechani2 points

I briefly discussed this on the General Discussion thread. Over the years I have picked up a library of TTRPG books. Some I have had since childhood, some more recent acquisitions. I did read some of the childhood collection for fun, mostly reading the lore/player options/treasures/monsters sort of thing. But never played any game like this (though as of writing this I am preparing to get into one that is not part of this list). Dipping my toes into actually playing this sort of game. I decided to see how popular the books I had were, whether people were interested in playing them. This is not a short term project. This will take1 point

Howdy folks! Migrating over from Group 2, but been keeping up with everything here. I've loved pretty much everything going on here! I'm just gonna post some statements I did have over from that group but most of them line up and I'm more than willing to go with everything already noted as it is. I know it says no planes but no idea if you count Gliders as part of that and it was brought up over there of the extraterrestrial remnants so that's what that part is about. I'm moving @AsBloodTurnsEverCold to Group 1. He's expressed interest in the original concept as I posted it I think he'll enjoy that group quite a bit. Game 1 is full up, now. I can't accommodate more than 6 players in 1 game. Group 2 is down to just 3 players now.1 point

That works for me. I know the Elie, Exzel and Diamond storyline is slow at the moment but it should pick up soon. I can try to get Kari out here into other posts.1 point

AsBloodTurnsEverCold is very accurate. I think you're overthinking it. Here's my recommendation: Start with what sound exciting for you to play. This is a new world, an original setting, and the only limits are what everyone else in Game 2 agrees to. I highly encourage original characters. Outline what you like in a character. Let us know what excites you. See how it fits with everyone elses' ideas. Obviously be willing to adapt your character ideas to the world and what others want, but start from a strong "this is what I want to play" position. Put all your cards on the table. For all you know, everyone says "cool, let's do that!"1 point

I don't think having characters who might not be initially socially accepted would be too much of an issue...if anything the opposite. Its a social game essentially so the interplay between types could heighten the story with drama. I wouldn't overthink it just how much friction story wise are you willing to face. Sexuality seems baked in so I imagine Isabella would accommodate those situations as well as the people you are playing with and so far you do have @DreamsnThings interesting in playing Beastkin too and Saitai doesn't seem to oppose.1 point

Oh, no no. I saw the above and its classes. Problem is not there. You do know that I even showed a cow girl (as example) before. Well, if you know me, you also know that I have a certain trouble with character making. (It's a curse that follows me even in games). As it is, I do feel like my usual style of characters may be a little too restrained or limited by very unlikely possibilities. Despite that, I know I was given ways to make things happen. I'm just not sure how a "mutated" or transformed girl would fit well in a potential party later without being a weight for the others by being a negative attraction magnet, according to intended lo1 point

I provided a list of character tropes and ideas in the original interest check thread. That being said, I did specify that these two games are NOT set in the same world. So of you want to make changes to increase your enjoyment, this is the time and place to make suggestions for what will make this more enjoyable for you. I certainly don't want anyone feeling obliged to play this game and feeling constrained by its limitations. If you want something different than what I outlined above, say so. Please. Let's make this the world you want to play in.1 point

One of my character ideas on a list of some, below. I will let you take a guess. I assume the expected character has to be, well... classic and not colorful, I guess... I imagine that a character that overflows with steampunk isn't good for this. Just making assumptions. I know the theme looked for here is dark, gothic or weird. I am struggling to find a character I like with what I know so far of the "theme". My last one before this miiight fit but I am still unsure about it, to be fully honest... I thought about maybe going with Lilium (vampire or not). She is of victorian age but doesn't quite fit the wild west or steam1 point

Guess we will start with this, while I think about things I really want. I expect I would probably agree with it, but more checking where the line is on cartoony or not, is probably good to have everyone on the same page. I do like Steampunk as a concept, but have only read/experienced a little of it, so good to get at least a general idea of the sort of technology you/we are thinking. Especially if we push more in that direction than Wild West or have characters connected to it.1 point

Not sure if I have much to say in that area. Rather open minded, I would be surprised at this point if there is anything I strongly don't like. Will keep thinking about anything that falls in the strong like area, but not sure yet if there is anything will fall into that category, rather than just things that fall more into I think it is cool category.1 point

Poll is up. I will keep an eye on this for new votes. See who/how many many vote. Give it some time. Again, this is a long term project, so won't rush into a choice, unless maybe a whole lot of people I enjoy writing with pick one option. Even then, that will just make me choose one to pick reading more quickly. Will take some to read and figure it out, especially I am a GM rather than player. Broke it up into three questions, whether you want to play as a player, GM, and if you are already familiar with the system. https://ecchidreams.com/community/topic/9930-poll-satais-library-of-mostly-unread-ttrpg-which-would-you-be-intereste1 point

I was planning to just wholesale import basic historic reality (more like... um... well, as if it were a tv show - sometimes veering into exploring darker themes, sometimes just handwaving the troublesome aspects, depending on how much anyone wants to focus on them and what fits into the story) and alter whatever needed to be altered to fit the setting. That includes the the rebel remnants, ex-confederates, recently freed slaves, the encroachment of the settlers on First Nations lands, the Army carrying out its campaign to clear the "savages" from the lands... But as WickedCadrach said, as background unless it becomes useful to the plot1 point

I feel like we could still explore a post-Civil War era without the civil war having been started for the same reason. The introduction of strange steampunk technology could result in the same sort of divide between the industrialized north and the plantation focused south. Perhaps we could use automatonized people instead? Or perhaps an inbalance in the existence of the special blue-coal type resource? It could be shifted instead into a war created mostly from a class disparity, perhaps one which existed much more heavily in the south. Maybe they instead shifted closer to neo-feudalism, and it wasn't a specific set of peoples but more a gene1 point

I agree with this notion. It's a touch early for the Golden Dawn to be a thing, but it feels like Hermetic and Thelemic magic might be an aesthetic choice that makes sense for a character like that. EDIT: Oh! Also, if you want to go nuts with it, Google 'Thelemic sex magic'. Crowley was just... if I read about this man in a book, I'd say the author was stretching believability. EDIT 2: Eroto-comatose lucidity - aka, slow, tantric sex until you see the gods and spirits of the invisible world. Like I said... wild stuff.1 point

@IsabellaRose I think you have great handle on everything, I understand you idea of not explaining were magic comes from but I just want to make sure if I do play a deviant British aristocract with some semblance of magic that I won't unwittingly be a servant of Cthulhu and go insane. I also don't want to use native American source partially because I don't know anything about it but it also feels like appropriation.1 point

I think we need to talk about this. The story seems to be taking a long, hard look at the human condition and the weight of expansion, technological advancement, wealth and power - slavery and its echoes are certainly part of that. I, for one, think if we're going to talk about the Army and the First Nations, enslaved people also need to be included.1 point

I am not sure if we are just supposed to be listing our own ideas for now, or discussing each others too and other things. I still don’t expect anything to fall under no for me. The above works for me if Isabella and the rest of the group thinks it works. That sort of group for the characters works for me too, might help me cut down on the list of character types I was thinking between. But a surprising number might still fit, will work my way down to a single choice as we finish up the details.1 point

The geography's actually super easy. Just remember two rivers and California. The Mississippi runs north to south and cuts the USA in half. In 1880, everything east is 'civilization', and everything west is wilderness, homesteads, and one-street towns (basically). The Rio Grande runs from the north-west to the south-east and divides the USA from Mexico. Mexico used to own a bunch of stuff north of the Rio Grande but lost it after people decided they'd rather be part of the USA, mainly because that meant they'd get to keep owning other people as property. The USA changes its mind on that idea a while later anyway. California i1 point

Ghosts in the Flesh I feel them before I hear them. Octavia’s laughter, sharp and familiar, coils around the back of my mind. Luna’s sigh follows, tender and aching, as if she still doesn’t quite believe she’s here. But they are both here, inside me, crowded into the same fragile flesh that was supposed to be mine alone. It was only meant to be temporary, a stopgap, a mercy. Octavia’s ghost had already been with me for months, tucked like a burning coal into the neural buffer no one else dared use. And then Luna… my bright, impossible Luna. She should have had her own body, her own future. But the people hunting me found her, and ma1 point

Might make a separate topic in the club with a poll and link to it here when it is done. Since in theory it could lead to setting something up here someday. Though who votes might be as important as how many vote, and I know a number of them might be tricky for people to get into if they don’t already have books/familiarity themselves, especially ones that are long out of print and/or have a bunch of books. But I like polls and might be interesting to see results.1 point

I like the crazy blue mineral/crystal. Two names to put forward: Luminite, or Cyanthium. Though that's what the smarty pants call it. The common folk might refer to it as 'Bluefire' or 'Glowstone.' @WritesNaughtyStories I'm with you on the promiscuity, and it makes sense that it being a taboo absolutely does NOT stop people. @IsabellaRoseI'm on board with the list pretty much as is and I like the summing up there. Given we're working in an Alternate History of the real world, you'll all have to forgive my geographical or historical blunders (although I know we're not using real figures.) I'm pretty much on board with Izzy's list. I want to campaign for having the discussion about First Nations and the Army - those both loom large in most westerns.1 point

All of those character options sound like they'd fit pretty seamlessly! For the vampire-esque character, you wouldn't even need to retain any of the actual weaknesses of a traditional vampire. You just "look" like one, so superstitious common folk assume you must be one. You're just an eccentric inventory/scientist who has fled persecution in Europe/back east and setup shop in this town, because you can get anything you need via the railroad in town, and you get the privacy to conduct your experiments without someone looking over your shoulder. But of course, rumors abound about what exactly it is you do in that big house all alone, and1 point

I won't do a classic Vampire then, that is fine. Like I said, I do have other ideas as well. That said (and maybe someone already brought this up but I was too tired last night to notice), maybe the being a weird Human thing would work. Sort of like the weirdo from another culture like @WritesNaughtyStories combined with the Dr. Frankenstein angle. Maybe they look a little vampiric, and they have a bad reputation of being a Vampire (for people who don't know them, sort of like @WickedCadrach's idea of weird being called, for example, "The Werewolf of ____"), and part of their looks and such were due to nature and/or experiments they have1 point

Agreeing with this. The feeling of exposure and self-reliance when there's one lawman for your town and sometimes not even that (I'm thinking of Bass Reeves, the US Marshal who was the only lawman covering a frontier territory roughly the size of South Dakota and the real-world inspiration behind The Lone Ranger).1 point

Well this is going to be rather short to start. Off the top of my head, I cannot think of anything that I strongly do not want, I am rather open minded. Though I will mention it if someone else suggests something that falls in that category. I would have to think a little more about things I would strongly like, I am rather open-minded. But following Isabella’s advice, won’t list things I am just okay with or kind of like, have to consider if anything falls into the stronger like category.1 point

I'm posting the basic rules and custom build info here. This will be edited, but locked to prevent it getting messy. LEADS, FEATURES, AND EXTRAS Your stories will be populated by all sorts of characters: heroes and villains, damsels in distress, plucky sidekicks, untrustworthy scoundrels, and everyone else who lives wherever you set your story. Characters come in three flavors in the Cortex Dramatic Roleplaying Game: Leads, Features, and Extras. Leads are the characters that your stories are about; a different player controls each Lead. It’s the players’ job to tell an interesting and compelling story with their characters. Eac1 point
