Even worse, in those shows where whoever the first female character that appears will win at the end, the childhood friend is usually auto eliminated as the endgame option simply for being the childhood friend, even if they're the first female character to appear.  They also love stringing along the possibility only to shatter your hopes, and it's very frustrating.  I understand your pain about the childhood friend always losing aside from the rarest of rare cases.  Even rarer than a unicorn sometimes.

Yeah fucking tell me about it. I don't like watching romance animes without knowing the outcome anymore because of this. Instead I just play visual novels where I can force the childhood friend to win, and I do, many, many times.
