I wouldn't really dismiss it out of hand? I mean, it's the future, and some people like to rebel against norms. Who's to say there wasn't a means out there to drastically alter ones physiology to be something less human and more humanoid? Could be genetic splicing, a new mod or something that hits the streets, a whole new synthetic form.
