The man she chose would be an office worker in Black City, despite his tiny height and weak personality that made him easily crumble under pressure; they had five children together, living outside the city. As her husband got himself involved in gambling and debts, he ended up fleeing the city, and the debt was passed onto his now ex-wife, who was lead to believe the money she was paying was to cover the downpayment for his private apartment in Black City (she doesn't know what happened to him, but knows he's still alive; the loansharks were careful to avoid telling her the truth, hoping to make her a sex slave if she couldn't pay it all back). In order to secure a job, Melony did some digging into her husband's files, and found that he had been in some risqué relationships with the editor of a magazine and their assistant, two timing both women. After blackmailing the assistant, having her resign from the job, she showed the editor incriminating evidence -- she was still sleeping with her ex even after he fled. If she was found out, they'd come looking for her ex-husband and start harassing the editor. She is employed now with the magazine, although her salary is mostly blackmail money from the editor to keep her from ratting them out. Since then, Melony keeps her hands clean; her children, who are also unaware of their father's situation, have issues of their own to deal with in Black City (although their status is unknown to her).
