I'm still deciding on things regarding this roleplay, but here's what I'm planning thus far:

Concrete lore and plans:

Dragons do not hatch from eggs as dragons. Instead, they are sprouted from animals or in rare cases humans who have been exposed to a special type of magic that works on the belief of sentient beings. It is humanity's dwindling belief in myths and legends that have caused a reduction in new dragons being created, though the weaker collective belief has caused a "halfway" point of sorts, where a creature that was believed to be able to emerge into a dragon may obtain a small amount of dragon capabilities (including shapeshifting into a human form), but cannot fully graduate into a dragon in form.

Dragons are not traditionally male or female, but may identify as such.

Dragons have the ability to assume human form. They can assume male forms and female forms alike.

Dragons, especially those who were never human do not have a sense of shame, thus they don't really bother with human clothing in human form unless pushed to.

Things I'm still deciding on:

The era + setting:

Modern era, where it's set in a more rural or countryside/secluded part?

The past of our world, maybe? If so, the Eastern areas, or the more Western ones?

Fantasy setting complete with sword and sorcery? (Will likely alter how dragons are formed a little bit)

In a weird way, the concept kind of reminds me vaguely of... The Legend of Dragoon? It's probably entirely just me, but the dragon emphasis kind of gave me inklings of it. >.>

I like me some swords and sorcery too, on that note. : p

Sounds like there's at least two peeps who want to move in the swords & sorcery direction.

If I do go that route, I wonder if I should maintain the whole dragon origin of how they manifest from people's beliefs/emerge from normal beasts through magical means, or if I should just let them be dragons as is - hatching from big eggs as per usual.

(From there, I was thinking that dragons turned from humans would be rare and the most powerful, seeing how dragons emerge from human belief -> human believes whatever -> gains unlimited power)

Heck, I was thinking of having actual dragonstones (which with our modern knowledge we know are just ammonite fossils) play some kind of role, be it as a catalyst for enhancing or improving magical abilities and/or allowing one to gain the traits of a dragon. And from there I'd have a non-player character who was the will of many dragonstones whose dragon form was basically just a giant ammonite.

Hello

Looking back, I kinda had an idea

What if it *was* modern, but some cataclysm or something brought us back to medieval times (with maybe more of a fantastical spin), at which time dragons reemerge?

Well the original plan did have to do with it existing in our reality, be it the past or present. Such a future could help with explaining why Eastern-inspired and Western-inspired places are so closeby or at least more accessible than our places.

... I could insert some "grounded but fantastical elements" to hint towards this, like maybe at some point we managed to revive dinosaurs, they escaped, wrecked us and the ecosystem but in this post-ruination world they're basically like glorified bulls and have joined the dire wolves in being our generic enemies

Maybe one of them knows Gigaflare.

Things are fantastic on this day.

dragons emerge to lead humanity or something after something happens maybe

My idea is that they're hidden, but this could be a motivation, since there are some dragons that, while staying hidden, reach out to younglings to mentor them.

The dragons believe that while few would believe the younger humans, plus the older ones would or may take action if alerted of their presence, they are open to lend a hand to the younger generation.

That sounds fun. Players could potentially be some of those younglings?

Yeah, that's the idea. A young adventurer or swordsman could train under a dragon. In fact, I'm planning for a character adopted and raised by a dragon.

Heck, what if the PCs are trying to stop the catastrophe with powers given to them by dragons?

Then it shall be. These powers will likely manifest as things akin to basic offensive spells at first, and for the most part, and some less offensive spells like healing or buffing. It is only at the most advanced of levels where they start to do some really broken stuff.

I kinda wanna focus on being a healer character, maybe also a blacksmith/tinkerer

For a healer, maybe an appropriately-themed relic, or a Dragonstone.

For a Blacksmith/Tinkerer, go nuts. In such a setting I imagine technology of old is being reverse-engineered or reinvented.

Not sure, but sense healer and blacksmith where already picked, I guess I would go with soccerer, or magic master or something.

Try to keep starting magic ability a bit on the lower end for humans. What elements were you thinking of running with

I'm kinda thinking that my gal would have healing powers, was raised as a blacksmith apprentice or something (I like the goggles) and then healed people in secret

Good ol dual-classing.

Also, with these contributions, I think I'll work on things like... seeing how advanced this world might be in some respects.

I have some characters I have in mind myself:

1. A special, high-tier NPC that's an accumulation of Dragonstones that basically gains the form of an ammonite-like dragon.

2. A girl raised by a human-despising dragon. (Perhaps one could portray this dragon?)

3. A seafaring captain who seeks the dragons. Whether this character is a he or she is up for consideration. Some part of me wanted to make the ship a skyship but I actually wonder if I should or if I should let tech stay a bit lower/have skyfaring technology be an advancement that occurs within the RP itself.

Hello.

I will jump in the brainstorming. Hope you don't mind : )

I think it would be good to gather all lore&setting info that's locked somewhere when it's ready to make char creation easier.

I also support medieval fantasy setting or alternatively something bit more technologically advances, like steampunk or some other punk.

Is it the origin of the dragons decided? There are ancient dragons that were born from eggs and they are hiding from humankind, so people believe they are dead. Some might even believe they never existed in the first place and were legends only. The new dragons are 'born' from humans in rare cases and more commonly from animals. This change is initiated by dragonstone or by lingering magical energy?

How common and strong magic would be in general? I'm supposing both young and ancient dragons would have superior magical abilities to the humans?

If I have misunderstood something wrong, I'm happy to be corrected : )
