Depending on which one you choose, the career can progress one of the two ways: a) aspiring knight traveling and offering services of a guard for hire -> saved the life of a knight and in return got knighted by him -> knight sworn to a noble house by having saved a member of the noble family or having won in a tourney and noticed by the head of the noble family -> saved the life of the prince (MC) from an attack (during traveling, on the battlefield, assassination attempt in the noble's house, etc) and taken on as the prince's Sworn Shield; b) aspiring knight attending tourneys routinely to earn money and some noble lord's or lady's patronage ends up impressing the king at a tourney hosted by him, knighted, and taken into the kingsguard -> made the prince's Sworn Shield; c) a daughter/son of a noble house who is set to not inherit anything and has limited options for a good future, so makes use of the opportunity when king announces he is holding a tourney to find a knight to be the personal guard for the prince, his heir. All of those can be combined however my partner likes, more ideas for the knight's path to becoming the prince's Sworn Shield can be thought up, ultimately, it comes down to this: whatever you choose, YC will be responsible for the prince's safety both by day and by night, will train the prince in martial arts, and more. What stands in the way of romance is the knight's vow of celibacy. But can YC control their (seemingly) one-sided feelings all while watching the prince visit brothels and take male and female courtiers and servants to bed? - lady/lord heading a noble house: a) YC is the head of a noble house who has traveled to kingdom's capital and is staying at the royal castle as they serve on the king's council (you can choose what their role is: master of coin (treasurer), master of ships, etc). As part of his learning, the Crown Prince is present at the council gatherings, and sometimes he would ask the different council members for answers to his questions or explanations on various matters, and sometimes he would ask for advice. As time passes and both characters get more and more familiar with one another, a companionship develops and chemistry builds. One night, after a few drinks while exchanging stories, the two let their passions take over and sleep together. This is extremely dangerous, but now that the line has been crossed, it is hard to stop. If the king finds out, both may be punished, but one more severely than the other. b) The heir prince is traveling around the kingdom on a diplomacy mission, personally visiting all the bigger and lesser noble houses, be their paramount of a region or vassals to one. He is quickly earning himself favor both with the nobles and the commoners. Of course, as he has visited all the houses of the regions closer to the capital, he also visits YC's house when he arrives at the region. The prince is fascinating as he takes keen interest in even the wellbeing of the runt in a dog's litter. It's easy to fall in love with him, and that's how the head of the noble house ends up spending the night with the prince before his departure to continue the trip. A little over a year later, YC comes to the capital to join the king's council, having made a name for themselves as an honorable individual and been appointed to a position in which they'd advise the king. But he is exonerated when it is proven that the king died of natural causes, even though signs similar to symptoms of poisoning were found. All the tests showed there was no poison in his body. But he is sure that his father was killed, even though it was not him who did it. So, the prince went from captive to ward of the crown. He refuses to go back home because the killer is out there, and honestly, he did not want to be the heir. A delegation is sent to treat with him, and come back empty handed. The prime suspect in the prince's mind then becomes the king. The common and noble folk of his home kingdom are perplexed as to why the heir would not go back even if his innocence had been proven.
