This is awesome. I like this. I do think runic should be a bit more than a language. It should be a language so complex that mortal minds can never fully comprehend. It should be the language the gods speak as they narrate the events of the world.

Magic mechanically in Fabula Ultima has to systems. A spell list that does a specific effect in combat, and rituals that can be used narratively to do anything. And this fits really well.

Automatons are a creature type in Fabula Ultima. They're probably built and supported by engineering, but programmed and animated by magic. So steampunk dragon should be a rare and terrifying creature.

Though this does give me an idea of manor housed exclusively by automaton servants with varying level of sentience.

Well the runic is a language and its power grows from your vocabulary and you naturally forget words as you stop using them... So humans by comparison still speak barbaric lile mage example, but for humans, wizards speak as if they are a narator for a novel. And yeah, automatons are powered by artifical souls that are found in one rare stone.

Spell lists would be limited to what kind of phrases you were told and rituals... Yeah its same as applying runes to items, but with chalk, not engraving.

We could probably discuss the mechanics of this magic system, and that might be a fun thread to start. Especially to greenlight certain magic and rituals for villans especially.

But I think the gist of the magic system is that magic is a metaphysical force that can be manipulated through spoken word, script written with special materials, or objects especially attuned to it.

I'd also like to urge everyone to create a location, ideally with some history and maybe even a threat. Once we got a couple locations, historic events, and threats we can start making groups and characters.

I have an idea... Dragon island... Its a sort of mythological place, where dragons of all sorts of things live. Its basically like pantheon of psuedo-divine creatures and i call dragons all sorts of mythological scalies, like wyverns, serpents, wyrms, drakes, etc.

Dragons are sentient and very powerful, they are basically on level with gods, except they are not made of actual divine matter.

I am not exactly sure how it would look but its basically meant to be a "perfect" society. And all dragons are technically genderfluid and pansexual, because shapeshifting and near infinite mana, so they can make themselves whatever they want. But in general, they stick to usual male-female in most cases.
