As for advice for a brand new roleplayer, rule number 1 is an easy one:  The whole point is to have fun.  I know it might sound kinda corny and obvious, but really, it's the whole reason we're all here.  If, for any reason, you're playing a roleplay and not having fun, you need to look at why that is and decide if it's worth continuing.

Beyond that, any kind of writing skills you can develop will help you greatly here.  And if you have some writing experience, well, all the better.
