Realistic polyamorous space ship crew

I've been kicking around an idea adapted from The Expanse. The idea of polyamorous ship crews make a lot of sense to me: the quarters are close, life and work are unified and there's no way to hide relationships. I hate trying to co-opt existing characters though so I have this vague idea of a captain named Kristina March but no real thought about the rest of the crew beyond she genuinely loves them. It's a grand thought, leaning heavily on it making narrative sense rather porn sense, but not shying away from the sex scenes.

I admit this thought is pretty general and ill-defined at the moment, but if there's any interest in it, I'd love to see if it can't be worked into something fun, sustainable and interesting.
