The Mortal - Robin Graham

Mortal's Lover: ???

Look/Eyes/Origin: Robin Graham is the new girl in town. She is quiet, modest, and has the sad eyes of someone who has lost something. Her wrist-length sleeves and long skirts stand out in the summer beach-town, and when she does speak, her soft midwestern accent pairs with her appearance to make it clear—if only to her—that she does not belong here. 

She works at the concession stand at the Playland amusement park, handing out corndogs and bags of popcorn. The word is that she moved to Potter's Neck at the start of summer with only a backpack and a small carboard box, and she and her mom are staying with her aunt Mari and cousin Charlotte (locals) in one of the cheap, southside apartments. 

Backstory: Declare your backstory lastChoose one person to be your Lover. Give them three Strings on you. Take one String on them.

Moves: 

True Love: You always have exactly one Lover. The first is chosen during Your Backstory. If you ever fall in love with someone else instead, give them a String and they become your new Lover. You always carry 1 forward to earning your Lover's heart or fancy. 

Sympathy is My Weapon: Every time you forgive someone for hurting you, and excuse their base nature, gain a String on them. 

Down the Rabbit Hole: When you go poking your nose in affairs not meant for your kind, someone involved in the situation gets a String on you, and you mark experience. 

Darkest Self: Nobody understands you. Nobody even tries. You do so much for the people you love, and they walk all over you. Enough is enough! Betray them. Show them what it's like to be uncared for. Reveal their monstrosity and yours. Only seeing the pain that you're causing your Lover will let you escape your Darkest Self. 

Sex Move: When you have sex with someone, it awakens something sinister within. The next time you take your eyes off them, they become their Darkest Self. 

Strings:

2x Dylan - I saw them sneaking out of an abandoned house. I don't think their parents are really on holiday in Greece... I think they live there—alone. How are they surviving?

1x Dylan - There's something about him. I have to know more. We've barely spoken, but I've watched him—at work, on my walks home, when I go to the shore. What's in that Marlboro box he carries? He seems to love the pier, too... I feel so connected to him.

1x Selene - I saw her going through my cousin Charlotte's belongings. I think she's a bit of a compulsive thief. I won't say anything. Charlotte would probably just get mad at me for saying something like that about her classmate.

1x Velvet - I saw an older man following Velvet. He creeped me out, so I stepped in and pretended like we were hanging out to help her get away from him, and she seemed relieved. I think maybe she needed time on her own.

1x Velvet - It looks like Velvet really appreciates how good Robin looks when she starts showing a little more skin. Or maybe she's more interested in appreciating what's underneath?

The Witch - Selene Lefaye

Look/Eyes/Origin: A lithe girl with deep amethyst eyes, Selene is a girl often concerned about her appearances, if only because she believes they might be part of why people don't want to be friends with her. Part of it stems from her being shorter than others her age, and less developed in ways which make her self-conscious. However because putting too much work into her appearances would get in the way of other things she enjoys (mostly reading), she prefers to take shortcuts to make herself appear older (primarily through the use of bras and tops which make her appear more pronounced, and shoes or boots with either heels, lifts, or the like). While she does own a proper witch's hat she tends not to wear it in public, instead only doing so during rituals. Out in public she prefers to wear skirts with a much beloved wide sleeved black coat, often matching it with similar darker shades, and various purple hues. She also enjoys wearing frilly things (most of her undergarments include frills or lace), dresses, and lighter silken outfits, including those which may be a slight bit translucent (sundress weather is some of the best weather).

An avid reader and native to Potter's Neck, Selene would have started her first year at college as a freshman were it not for the unusually long summer. Considered somewhat weird and an outcast in middle and high school (perhaps because things often went missing around her, or perhaps because she always has her face buried in a book, or perhaps because she is socially a bit awkward and sometimes tries a bit too hard to be people's friend) she had been hoping to make new friends with a fresh start in her college life. Hoping to gain at least some credibility as someone who isn't weird, and perhaps some friends, Selene applied for and managed to attain a job at the Baja Surf Stylings shop despite having the grades for a full ride scholarship, only to then discover that it actually wasn't a very cool place to work. When things aren't busy she often occupies herself with reading books, one of her favorite past times beyond taking long walks across the pale-sanded beaches. Her home is pretty typical, albeit recently quiet with her parents away on vacation.

Selene enjoys structure and tends to keep to a set schedule, some parts of which are planned out months or even years in advance (although these parts often relate to her occult rituals). While she wants to appear normal enough to attain some friends Selene cannot help but to occasionally pilfer things that belong to other people when the opportunity presents itself. Part of this stems from her belief that it is important to do so as attainting said items helps her to protect other people (even if they don't want or don't need said protection). The part she doesn't want to admit to herself is that said items make her feel like she is closer to them (and would provide her the opportunity to at least spy on them, to confirm to herself that she is closer to them). She might also have slight kleptomaniac tendencies (something she definitely would never admit to, and something which has perhaps been developed through her study of the occult).

Recently her parents ended up separating. Selene stays with her father, mostly because he won the case against her mother and she has grown used to her childhood home. She still loves them both, although her mother is always worried about her. Her father says they separated because her mother blames him for something he isn't guilty of. Her mother says they separated because her father was acting inappropriately, although she didn't go much more into it. She still has a good relationship with both, especially her father who often spoils her, and while it does sadden her that they separated she doesn't typically show it, finding solace in her books and secret occult studies.

After a long walk along the sandy beaches Selene generally makes a habit of stopping by one specific concession stand within Playland. She always asks for a corndog with mustard and, if they have it, honey (they never do). Also a free cup of water.

Backstory:
You start the game with two Sympathetic Tokens. Decide whose and what they are. One of the others caught you rummaging through their friend’s stuff, but hasn’t said anything. They get a String on you.

Moves:
Sympathetic Tokens
You gain power from Sympathetic Tokens - items of personal significance taken from others. Sympathetic Tokens count as Strings.

Hex-Casting
You can cast Hexes. Choose two that you know. To cast them, either expend a Sympathetic Token during a secret ritual, or meet the target’s gaze and chant at them in tongues. Then roll with Dark. On a 10 up, the Hex works, and can easily be reversed. On a 7-9, it works but choose one:
The casting does you 1 Harm;
The Hex has weird side effects;
Trigger your Darkest Self.


Hexes:
Binding
The person cannot physically harm others.

Watching
You enter a deep sleep, and begin to see the world through the eyes of the hexed. You can feel their reactions to and impressions of what they are seeing.

Darkest Self:
The time for subtlety and patience is over. You’re too powerful to put up with their garbage any longer. You hex anyone who slights you. All of your hexes have unexpected side effects, and are more effective than you are comfortable with. To escape your Darkest Self, you must offer peace to the one you have hurt the most.

Sex Move:
After sex, you can take a Sympathetic Token from them. They know about it, and it’s cool.

Strings:

Dylan - I think he might actually be a little interested in me! Oh gosh! This is a big revelation! Right?
Velvet - While performing the Watching Hex upon Velvet a spooky, scary voice spoke to me in my mind! I think. It felt like something ominous was speaking, at least. Chastising me for poking my head where it doesn't belong. And then it ended. Really spooky. Is there something more to her?

Sympathetic Tokens:
Dylan - From Dylan I acquired a photograph! On it appears to be a mother holding their young child. While she smiles at the child the child has turned their head, making their face a bit too blurry to recognize (not that I would recognize a baby, right?)! Maybe it is him? Or her? What is Dylan anyway?
Velvet - I managed to procure their notebook! It appears to have some sort of escape plan written within. It feels esoteric and odd, and seems to focus a lot on protecting one's mind. A little weird but I like weird!

Basic Moves and Rules Reference

Turn Someone On
When you turn someone on, roll with Hot.
On a 10 up, gain a String on them and they choose a reaction from below.
On a 7-9, they can either give you a String or choose one of the reactions.

  • I give myself to you
  • I promise something I think you want, or
  • I get embarrassed and act awkward.

For rules on asexuality and non-attraction, turn to page 49.

Shut Someone Down
When you shut someone down, roll with Cold.
On a 10 up, choose one from below.
On a 7-9, choose one from below, but you come across poorly, and they give you a Condition in return.

  • They lose a String on you,
  • If they have no Strings on you, gain one on them,
  • They gain a Condition, or
  • You take 1 Forward.

Keep Your Cool
When you keep your cool and act despite fear, name what you’re afraid of and roll with Cold.
On a 10 up, you keep your cool and gain insight: ask the MC a question about the situation and take 1 Forward to acting on that information.
On a 7-9, the MC will tell you how your actions would leave you vulnerable, and you can choose to back down or go through with it.

Lash Out Physically
When you lash out physically, roll with Volatile.
On a 10 up, you deal them harm, and they choke up momentarily before they can react.
On a 7-9, you harm them but choose one:

  • They learn something about your true nature and gain a String on you,
  • The MC decides how bad the harm turns out,
  • You become your Darkest Self.

Run Away
When you run away, roll with Volatile. 
 On a 10 up, you get away to a safe place.
On a 7-9, you get away but choose one:

  • You run into something worse,
  • You cause a big scene, or
  • You leave something behind.

Gaze Into the Abyss
When you gaze into the abyss, name what you’re looking for and roll with Dark.
On a 10 up, the abyss shows you lucid visions, and you take 1 Forward to addressing them.
On a 7-9, the abyss shows you confusing and alarming visions, but you get your answer nonetheless.

Experience
Whenever you fail a roll, mark experience.

Pulling Strings
When you spend a String on someone, choose one:

  • Tempt them to do what you want,
  • Give them a Condition,
  • Add 1 to your roll against them, or
  • Add 1 to the harm you deal them.

To learn about tempting someone, turn to page 26.

Healing
When you take time to tend to your wounds, once per session you may heal 1 Harm. If someone else is there with you, tending to your wounds delicately and intimately - and perhaps with erotic subtext - you may heal an additional 1 Harm.

Skirting Death
To avoid death, erase all harm and choose one:

  • Become your Darkest Self,
  • Lose all Strings you have on everybody.

Conditions
If you take advantage of someone’s Condition while making a move against them, add 1 to your roll. A Condition goes away when the character suffering it takes appropriate action to alleviate it.

Gangs
Gangs add +1 to your rolls and harm as applicable.

The Hollow - Dylan (Potter)

Experience: 3 / 5

Look/Eyes/Origin: Dylan was made - by who or how they don't have any clear memory - to be enjoyed. That they do have memory of, Dylan assumes those who enjoyed them are the ones who made them, but they've gone. Leaving Dylan alone in a house that's always been abandoned since the beginning of summer. What's odder, or perhaps speaks to The Maker's desires, is Dylan is extremely androgynous and doesn't have a clear gender identity. They've cribbed together and awkward style that brashly displays their inexperience by watching Selene and the people on the Playland midway. After running into Robin Graham outside the abandoned house Dylan was kept in, they followed her to the midway and has become obsessed with the Corn Dog stand employee. Dylan's mysterious, deep green eyes look at the world, wide with wonder and anxiety. The other place Dylan likes to hang out is at the ice cream shop at the pier, where  a girl at the shop has developed a bit of a crush on Dylan, though Dylan doesn't really understand. They just notice Ellie looks at them, a lot, and gets a little quiet when Dylan goes to the counter. Every time Dylan has bought ice cream though, Ellie has made sure she was the one to give it to them.

Backstory: You’ve been taking your social cues from someone, and doing so has taught you a lot about them. Gain 2 Strings on them. Selene.

Someone’s seen through your invented past, and realized it’s all lies. They gain 2 Strings on you. Robin,

[x] Better Than Nothing When you gain a Condition, mark experience.

[x] A Blank Canvas When you take an action that embodies one of your Conditions, allowing that Condition to alter your sense of self, cross it off and add 1 to your roll.. 

[ ] Try Harder Next Time When you screw up, give yourself an appropriate Condition and take 1 Forward.

[ ] Fake Add 1 to any rolls you make while lying.

[ ] Metamorphosis When you Gaze Into the Abyss, on a 7 or higher the abyss will also show you what you must become, and you can permanently swap two of your stats.

[ ] Strange Impressions When a main character either harms you or helps you heal, you can respond by studying them with wide eyes. If you do, temporarily gain one of their Skin Moves and add it to your character sheet. It disappears once you use it.

Darkest Self: Your body is a prison. You don’t belong inside of it. You need to put it in harm’s way, and make it suffer, just like it’s made you suffer. There’s got to be a way to cut yourself out of it. You need to meet your makers, and hold them accountable for what they’ve done to you. To escape your Darkest Self, you must come to see how someone else feels more trapped than you do. 

Sex Move: When you have sex with someone, both players secretly write down whether the sex was confusing or soothing for their character. If you reveal the same answer, both characters mark experience. 

Strings:

2x Robin - She is as obsessed with me as I am her. What could she she in me?0

1x Robin - I know her bike chain is broken but she "rides" it to work every day. Why?

2x Selene - I've been watching her as she walks on the beach. I have taken my social cues from her.

Story
  A Drifter, having wandered for a long time she eventually made... a deal with a man, she was human once, maybe. but his touch, his power, his magic twisted her wants and self so very much. she considers herself his... because he wants her to... regardless of the fact something in the back of her mind is telling her this isnt right. he sends her out, not for her own happiness mind you, she gets enough of that from him... at least that's what he says, so that's what she feels.

  shes a good girl, doing what Mr. Ascars asks, bringing new friends and boyfriends to him for some fun. they are allways happier after they meet mr. Ascars... right?

  that nagging voice in her head is wrong... right?

  with no home to go back to, no family to rely on, no Self free from his charm wants or desires... Mr. Ascars is her everything... Atleast until im free...

  • Soul Debt You owe a debt to a Dark Power. Name it, and choose two Bargains it has made with you. The Dark Power can gain Strings. If ever it has 5 Strings on you, trigger your Darkest Self.
  • Dark Recruiter When you bring an innocent soul to the Dark Power, mark experience.

Bargins:

  •  Uncanny Voices You can give the Dark Power a String in order to realize a secret about someone you’re talking to. The owner of that character will reveal one of their secret fears, secret desires, or secret strengths (they choose which.)
  •  Strings Attached You can ask the Dark Power for something that you really, really want. The MC will attach a price to the thing you want, and hint at an undesired twist in its nature. If you pay the price, you’ll get what you’re after.

Darkest Self:
You find yourself shivering, needy, and alone. The Dark Power will make some daunting, open-ended demands. Every demand fulfilled brings you closer to feeling whole again, and removes one of the Dark Power’s Strings on you. You escape your Darkest Self when the Dark Power is out of Strings, or you make a bargain with an even more dangerous entity

*Sex Move:
When you have sex, the Dark Power loses a String on you and gains a String on whoever you had sex with.
Backstory:
You owe debts. Give away 3 Strings, divided any way you like between the Dark Power and the other characters. Someone thinks they can save you. Gain a String on them.
