Aside from the very good advice you received above, as a new poster I'd recommend that you start out trying some of the "forum games" on this site:

Read the rules on the first of the thread, and see if any of the games catch your interest.

While the games don't really have anything to do with the actual role-playing on the site, it does give you a feel of people.
